An Atlanta cop, identified as Investigator Aubree Horton, was shot and killed in Douglas County, Georgia, on Friday, October 4. According to Crime Online, he attempted a break-in early in the morning. Fox News reported that the cop lived in the same neighborhood and may have been dealing with a mental health episode or under the influence of drugs.
The outlet further revealed that the incident occurred at 5 a.m. a.m. outside the home, located on Orkney Way near E. Carroll Road in the St. Andrews Country Club neighborhood. Per an official statement from Douglas County Sheriff Tim Pounds, the homeowner opened fire in self-defense, thereby killing the man. Horton was off-duty at the time.

"On an attempted burglary, we understand that an individual attempted to gain entry into the residence. Once inside, the homeowner produced a firearm in self-defense and shot the individual. At this time, the individual is deceased."

According to the official obituary posted on Miller Funeral Home, Investigator Aubree Horton was 32 years old when he died. He was born on October 15, 1991, in Carrollton, GA.
He leaves behind his mother, Lesa Lyner Collins, and stepfather, Wilbur “Tonny” Glen Collins, III, of Tallapoosa. He was survived by a wife, Jamaica Horton, and a son, Carter Clay Horton, of Winston. Aubree had a twin sister, Avery Horton, of Winston; a sister, Vidalina Gocking-Rodriguez; a brother, James Bryant; and a niece, Amy Lynn Stitche.
The obituary also reveals that he was a "stellar student and athlete," having played football for Haralson County High School and Carrollton High School. He graduated from the latter in 2010. Horton later joined the Air Force Academy in Colorado in pursuit of a football career and enrolled at the University of West Georgia. There, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice.
Aubree Horton joined the Atlanta Police Department in November of 2015, having been introduced to the idea at a job fair during college. According to the obituary, he was a man of "strong integrity, professionalism, and drive." By 2023, he earned the rank of investigator of the fugitive unit, and by September 2024, he was dubbed Atlanta’s “Investigator of the Year."
During his tenure as an investigator, Aubree Horton closed "38 of his own case packages, an impressive task for a new investigator."
"Investigator Horton never shied away from gaining knowledge from senior personnel or helping other investigators with their cases in his unit. He was a true team player, a devoted brother in arms to his fellow officers, and a proud father to his son that he dearly loved."
As stated in the obituary, Aubree Horton's funeral will be held Thursday, October 10, 20244:00 p.m.00 PM at Hunter Hill First Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA. Those attending to honor the departed include Investigator Vidalina Gocking-Rodriguez, Investigator Brandon Byrd, Bishop Darrell Gooden, Sergeant Scott Perry, and Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum.
Furthermore, several other colleagues will render their services in one way or another, including Investigator Brandon Byrd, Sergeant Scott Perry, David McWhorter, Sergeant Mancia O’Hare, Investigator Mason Mercure, and Corey Jones. Members of the Fugitive Unit will serve as honorary pallbearers.
