Aaron Taylor-Johnson has shared a heartfelt tribute to his wife, Sam Taylor-Johnson, on his Instagram for her birthday. The Nosferatu actor is married to the renowned director, who turns 58 this year.
In the special birthday post, the couple is seen enjoying a vacation away from the spotlight. Alongside the pictures, the actor expressed his love, by writing:
"Happy Birthday gorgeous! Love spending every moment with you."
The couple, who have a 23-year age difference, have often faced scrutiny throughout their 18-year relationship. They first met in 2008, when Aaron, then 18, auditioned for the role of a young John Lennon, in the film "Nowhere Boy", directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.
"I knew instantly with Sam that I’d found my soulmate. I knew instantly that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with this person." Aaron Taylor-Johnson said in an interview with The Telegraph.
The pair started dating soon, and a year later, the pair were engaged.
'We were very professional through the entire film. ... But everyone on set knew. And as soon as we finished, he told me he was going to marry me. We had never been on a date, or even kissed" Sam said in an interview with Harper's Bazaar.
Their daughters, Wylda Rae and Romy Hero, were born in 2010, and 2012 respectively, and the couple tied the knot in June 2012, after a few years of dating. The couple also co-parent Sam's daughters from her previous marriage.
"My whole thing, my priority, is my family, my kids and my wife. That’s my future. I don’t really care about what role is next. That s--- couldn’t bother me in the slightest." said Aaron in an interview with The Independent.
After their marriage, the couple adopted the surname Taylor-Johnson, with Aaron insisting on the name change ahead of his then upcoming film, "Anna Karenina."
“I just don’t see why women need to take the man’s name. I wanted to be a part of her just as much as she wanted to be part of me.” he said in an interview with the Evening Standard.
More about Aaron Taylor-Johnson's wife, Sam Taylor-Johnson
Sam Taylor-Johnson (born Samantha Louise Taylor-Wood) was born in Croydon, London, on 4 March 1967, to parents David and Geraldine. Her parents later divorced when she was young. She began her career in fine art photography, showcasing her work in various exhibitions before transitioning to filmmaking. She made her directorial debut with "Nowhere Boy", and in 2024, she was roped in to direct the Amy Winehouse, "Back to Black". She is also a cancer survivor, having overcome colon cancer at the age of 30, and later underwent treatment for breast cancer in 2000.
In 1997, she married art dealer, Jay Jopling, and the couple had two daughters, born in 1997 and 2005. In 2008, the couple filed for divorce after eleven years of marriage. Later that same year, she began dating actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
Reflecting on her relationship with her now husband, the director shared in an interview with The Guardian:
"If I had been cynical for a second, it wouldn’t have worked. If I had questioned anything, it would never have worked. I’m quite instinctual. I’ve gone feet first into everything in my life. I’m always, ‘This seems amazing’, and I jump straight in and go through the experience, whether good or bad,"
She also added:
"We’re a bit of an anomaly, but it’s that thing: after 14 years you just think, surely by now it doesn’t really matter?”
She further said:
"He gives me that sort of stability, calmness. I’m definitely the kind of frenetic, mad energy that needs someone to anchor me. Keep me a bit more grounded. Which he certainly does. He really loves being quiet, in nature. He’s a real stay-at-home person.”
In 2021, the couple got each other's names tattooed, and in 2022, they renewed their wedding vows to celebrate their tenth anniversary.
