Back in 2015, Bindi Irwin danced her way to victory on Season 21 of Dancing with the Stars. Bindi won the mirror ball trophy, partnering up with professional dancer Derek Hough. At the time, her younger brother Robert was just 12 years old.
Robert, who is also a wildlife conservationist, has officially been named the first celebrity contestant for the show’s 34th season. Both siblings are children of the late Steve Irwin, also known as ‘The Crocodile Hunter.’ Since winning the dance show, Bindi Irwin has entered motherhood, launched her debut picture book for children, and currently serves as the CEO of Australia Zoo. She resides with her family in Queensland, Australia.
Beyond the Ballroom: Bindi Irwin’s Life Today

Bindi Irwin met her now husband, Chandler Powell, as a teenager in 2013. Powell later moved to Australia to be with Irwin. He proposed to her in 2019, and they tied the knot the following year. According to a report shared by People Magazine, the couple initially had a plan to celebrate their day with a 200-guest wedding in April 2020; however, they couldn’t proceed with it due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Powell and Irwin later married in an intimate ceremony at the Australia Zoo.
Bindi Irwin on being a mother
In March 2021, Bindi shared an Instagram post celebrating her daughter’s birthday. She named her daughter ‘Grace Warrior Irwin Powell.' The post read
"Celebrating the two loves of my life. Happy first wedding anniversary to my sweetheart husband and day of birth to our beautiful daughter. Grace Warrior Irwin Powell. Our graceful warrior is the most beautiful light. Grace is named after my great-grandmother, and relatives in Chandler’s family dating back to the 1700s."
She continued,
"Her middle names, Warrior Irwin, are a tribute to my dad and his legacy as the most incredible Wildlife Warrior. Her last name is Powell and she already has such a kind soul just like her dad. There are no words to describe the infinite amount of love in our hearts for our sweet baby girl. She chose the perfect day to be born and we feel tremendously blessed."
According to a report shared by Today, Grace is being raised by her parents inside the Australia Zoo, which is owned by the Irwins. Grace, now a 4-year-old, is already a part of wildlife, like her family. She follows the legacy of her family by hand-feeding kangaroos, snuggling with a giant Aldabra tortoise, and more. Bindi Irwin shared,
"Our whole life revolves around wildlife. It’s not just what we do — it is completely who we are. I’ve been working with animals since before I could walk ... I was teeny tiny when my mom and dad started introducing me to different animals."
Bindi on being a children's book author
Bindi’s children’s picture book, “You Are a Wildlife Warrior!” was published in February. The book is partly dedicated to her parents and her daughter Grace, whose middle name is “Warrior.”
Bindi, in her conversation with TODAY, shares that talking about conservation and protecting the earth can often make us feel anxious and a little uncomfortable. She states that she’s just one person and contemplates how she can make a difference now. She explains her motive to launch the book.
"One of my greatest missions in life is to be able to share with everyone that you have an incredible voice, an amazing ability — whether you realize it or not — to truly effect positive change on the planet and we all have the opportunity to leave a legacy."
Bindi was diagnosed with endometriosis
In a podcast episode of A Life of Greatness with host Sarah Grynberg, the conservationist shared the ordeal she faced with hidden health issues for over a decade. She stated,
"The only people that knew that I was incredibly unwell ... my husband, my mom and my brother, and behind closed doors I was struggling to do anything and everything, it resulted in a lot of canceled plans, people must have thought I was just incredibly flaky because I was getting so sick from this disease that I would try to get up and I would just throw up, I was in so much pain all the time. Every day the fatigue and the battle."
Bindi Irwin later explained that endometriosis is a huge problem for a lot of people; however, it’s not being talked about enough. Bindi added,
"I went for 10 years undiagnosed because doctors really didn't know enough, they diagnosed me with a million other things, like IBS, or hormones or 'It's just part of being a woman.' The symptoms continued to snowball and it took me such a long time to find help and it’s a story that so many women and girls know all too well."
Bindi Irwin shared the news that she had undergone a successful surgery. She also mentioned that there is no cure for endometriosis, but she hopes to get a better shot at life after another surgery.
Robert announced his participation in the American reality television show Dancing with the Stars US, which Bindi took part in ten years ago.
