YNW Melly was arrested in connection with the double murder of his supposed best friends, Christopher “Juvy” Thomas Jr. and Anthony “Sak” Williams. The two passed away in October 2018, and Melly was cuffed and placed behind bars in a South Florida jail on February 13, 2019. However, a new twist in his trial may see him being granted an early release.
According to Hot New Hip Hop, Melly's legal representation, Michael A. Pizzi Jr., made inflammatory claims against the Broward Sheriff's Office in a whopping 12-page lawsuit. He accused them of subjecting his client to inhumane conditions and "debilitating isolation," including placing him in solitary confinement for about three years.
YNW Melly's lawyers claim he has been living in conditions worse than third-world countries
Per the Miami Herald, during his time in prison, Melly's legal representation has struggled to get in touch with him or meet with him for the three years he has been behind bars. Furthermore, Pizzi Jr contends that the Broward Sheriff's Office's actions were “egregious violations” of the rapper's first, fifth, sixth, eighth, and fourteenth Amendment rights.
Per NBC Miami, the lawsuit contends:
"His cruel treatment by the Broward Detention authorities warrants his immediate release from pretrial detention since the detaining authorities have shown such a callous disregard for his human dignity Right to Counsel."
It goes on to note that Melly's current living conditions
“shock the conscience and could not even be imagined ... even in a third-world country that has no guard rails protecting human decency and dignity.”
Per a federal judge's ruling, the Broward Sheriff’s Office will now have to defend its belief that YNW Melly should remain in jail. U.S. District Judge Melissa Damian set the date to December 6, and called on the BSO to produce “all documents and transcripts necessary for the resolution of this petition.”
Should they fail to respond by the fixed date, YNW Melly stands a chance of being released on bond. In case they do respond, he will be given two weeks to defend himself. The BSO issued a statement about the same, as published by XXL Magazine:
"The Broward Sheriff’s Office does not generally comment on pending litigation. However, the jail does not utilize 'solitary confinement.' Rather, Mr. Demons has been placed on administrative segregation, which is a classification resulting in an alternate living assignment for an inmate whose placement in the general population poses a serious threat to the safety of staff or inmates, or life and property."
YNW Melly, whose legal name is Jamell Demons, stands accused of fatally shooting his two childhood friends. The incident took place on October 26, 2018, at a recording studio located in Fort Lauderdale.
