Almost three years after the notorious Oscar slap in March 2022, Will Smith and Chris Rock are still at war. The two actors still hold resentment towards each other and have no plans to reconcile despite public talks and apologies.
Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on March 27, 2022, at the Oscars, which is still a topic of debate even after three years. It happened at the 94th Academy Awards, which is remembered by all of Hollywood and the world and haunts both the actors. It has affected both the actors' careers and private life.
Even though Will Smith has apologized to Chris Rock for his actions both personally and after receiving the award in the same event, he still holds resentment towards Rock. Smith slapped Rock after he made a joke about Jada Smith's appearance.
Rock joked about Jada Smith comparing her shaved head to Demi Moore's movie G.I. Jane. This joke caused some laughter amongst the audience, but Jada Smith was visibly upset. Will Smith, in anger, rushed to the stage and smacked Rock in front of the audience and on live TV. He then went back to his seat and said,
“Keep my wife’s name out your f---ing mouth.”
Smith expressed regret for his actions during his speech after winning the Best Actor award. Smith, in a written apology, wrote,
"A joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally," he said, but he would not defend his behavior, finding it "unacceptable and inexcusable." He went on to say that "violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive."
The incident sparked much controversy, leading to Will Smith resigning from the Academy Awards and being barred from the Oscars for ten years. This incident also sparked many debates, as some supported Smith's actions while some denounced them as an act of violence.
Will Smith and Chris Rock's unresolved tensions
It's been almost three years since the incident happened at the 94th Academy Awards, and both actors still hold resentment toward each other. Will Smtih allegedly "still hates" Chris Rock and holds him responsible for everything that has happened after, in both his private and professional life. According to In Touch Weekly, an insider reported that,
“Will’s getting the last laugh and loving it,” suggesting that Smith is enjoying what Rock is currently going through now.
Rock is currently facing controversy for cracking jokes about Mexicans.
The insider went on to add,
“Will will never forgive Chris for ruining his life, even though he’s managed to pick up the pieces in the last year or so. He still hates the guy and his smug attitude.”
Smith's resentment stems from the Oscars-slap incident and Rock's refusal to reconcile.
Chris Rock also has his issues, which stem from the incident and the events that followed. Rock is reportedly suffering from PTSD from what happened, according to sources. Smith's reconciliation attempts have also been rejected by Rock, who refuses to accept his apology or speak to him.
The insider also added,
"Others feel the best thing would be for these two egomaniacs to come together and hug it out, but they’re too proud."
