Created by Barry Jenkins, the film is a photo-realistic sequel to the digital remake of the 1994 animated classic The Lion King. It tells the story of Simba and how he ascends to the throne after his father Mufasa's death.

The film featured songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda and revolves around Simba and Nala as they leave their daughter Kiara under the hands of Timon and Pumba. They are soon paid a visit by Rafiki who sits with them and tells them the story of Mufasa and his best friend turned brother Taka who betrayed him over a lioness he liked. However, Mufasa forgives him and accepts him back into his kingdom, only to have him orchestrate his death years later.

Mufasa: The Lion King was also a tribute to James Earl Jones who originally voiced Mufasa in the 1994 film. Jenkins honored the late actor before the film as he told Variety:

"It felt like we had all lost a patriarch. We had all lost this man who meant so much. It felt like there was no way you could sit in this movie – go through an hour and 40 minutes — and not honor him in some way. [...] The studio agreed right away, and we tried to find something that was very simple, but also very clear and very powerful."

You can catch Mufasa: The Lion King on Disney+ from March 26, 2025.
