In a March 18 publication by Vulture, Mara stated that the former actress, Michelle Trachtenberg was bullied in school as a teen after gaining recognition as a child star. The Gossip Girl star died on February 26, at 39.
Wilson first met Michelle in the 90s as a child star. While Wilson played Matilda in Matilda, Michelle played Harriet in Harriet the Spy, both released in 1996. Wilson, Michelle, and Jerry Maguire's Jonathan Lipnicki formed a close friendship group and would often hang out.
Trachtenberg then moved from New York to Burbank, California, where Wilson lived, and the two attended the same middle school. The actress revealed that Michelle pulled her aside one day in school and asked,
"Are the kids here mean to you?' In tears, Trachtenberg continued, 'Because they are to me...They call me Harriet the Sl**, Harriet the b*****, Harriet the B****y Spy...and so much worse. They never stop.' I had never seen Michelle cry before. I’d never seen her anything other than perfectly composed and confident. That’s what it was, I realized. That’s why they said she was ‘mean.’ Because they were mean to her first, then when she went on the defense, they called her a bitch
While Wilson remembers Michelleas warm and noted that "everybody fell in love" with her, the actress' fame and friendliness got her in trouble at school.
"Everytime I even heard someone say 'Michelle Trachtenberg', a kid would jump in to say that they'd heard she was mean, full of herself, a total b****."
Wilson noted that she would immediately defend Michelle and say, "She's really nice," but she "couldn't reconcile" the kids' opinions of her.
"The kids were cruel" - Michelle Trachtenberg on being bullied in school
Michelle Trachtenberg rose to fame as a child actor, before her tragic death on February 29. After news of her death spread on the internet, a 2010 clip of the actress speaking to Cat Greenleaf, former host of Talk Stoop emerged. In the clip, Michelle Trachtenberg can be seen saying,
"The kids were cruel. I had a really really horrible time in school. They were terrible and torturous and evil."
In 2020, the actress shared a Valentine's Day post, noting,
"The kids were cruel. There is no need to harp on the past. But I still have scars from being thrown down the stairs and slammed into lockers head first."
The actress attended Notre Dame High School in Los Angeles, where the kids reportedly hurled food at her during lunchtime, leading her to eat alone in a different classroom. At 14, the actress hosted a party to celebrate her 8th-grade graduation. When she went to the bathroom during the party, she found that everyone had left. All the guests had gathered in the front garden, where they taunted her.
