The Old Guard 2 gets a release date
Netflix recently announced the release date for The Old Guard 2, which is a sequel to their 2020 superhero flick. The streamer has announced that it will be released on July 2, 2025. Victoria Mahoney is the director of this film, which is based on an eponymous comic book.
Written by Greg Rucka, the film is produced by Charlize Theron, David Ellison, AJ Dix, Marc Evans, Dana Goldberg, Beth Kono, Don Granger, and Gina Prince-Bythewood. The Old Guard 2 stars Theron as Andy, aka Andromache of Scythia. Besides her, the film also stars KiKi Layne, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Matthias Schoenaerts, Van Veronica Ngo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Uma Thurman, and Henry Golding.
Netflix drops BTS sneak peek for The Old Guard 2
To announce the release date, Netflix recently dropped a behind-the-scenes sneak peek of the film. The 40-second-long video with the behind-the-camera snippets of Theron riding a helicopter. It then showcases Theron and other cast members performing some stunts and fight scenes. At one point, Theron can be heard saying, "It's a workout."
The video ends with Theron hitting something with a sword with a chroma screen in the background. The first film in the franchise, The Old Guard, was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Greg Rucka. It follows a set of mercenaries who are on a deadly mission to seek revenge. Upon its release on July 10, 2020, on Netflix, the film received a positive response for its action and performance of everyone, especially Theron.
After its success, Theron spoke to Deadline about doing a sequel. She said,
"Let's have a little resting period, but just given the fact that all of us really want to do it, I'm sure when it's the right time, we'll start the conversation."
A sequel was announced by Netflix in 2021, and its shooting took place between June and September 2022. The film will be released on July 2, 2025, on Netflix.
