Mia Love, the first Black Republican woman elected to the U.S. Congress died at the age of 49 following a battle with brain cancer. Her family announced her death on Sunday, saying she died peacefully at her home in Saratoga Springs, Utah.
Love had been battling the disease for the past few years. Mia Love was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a very aggressive form of brain cancer, in 2022.
Doctors had first told her to expect 10 to 15 months of life. The prognosis was grim, but she was hopeful and pursued multiple treatments, including surgery, immunotherapy, and enrollment in a clinical trial. Despite her diagnosis, she remained active in public life, engaging in political and social discourse after leaving Congress.

"I went on vacation with my family. As soon as we landed, I felt a headache come on. When we went to the beach, the reflection of the sun on the water made the headache worse."
Worried about her condition, her husband took her to a hospital, and doctors performed scans and found a tumor in her brain. Love had had surgery to remove 95 percent of the tumor but further tests showed that it was a Grade 4 glioblastoma, a rapidly growing and lethal cancer.

After being diagnosed, Mia Love underwent an aggressive treatment. In January 2023, she joined a clinical trial at the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University, undergoing experimental immunotherapy.
Mia continued to keep her faith as her guiding force in her battle. She urged others to look for miracles and to have faith during trying times.
"At that moment, I decided to ask for miracles. I chose to believe promises made to me and to act in faith."
By early 2024, conditions worsened and she had stopped responding to treatment. In the month of March 2025, her daughter Abigale Love, wrote a heartfelt social media post stating her mother’s situation.
Mia Love had a very successful political career by becoming the first Black Republican woman in Congress. She represented Utah’s 4th Congressional District from 2015 to 2019, promoting conservative values but frequently at odds with President Donald Trump. After her 2018 upset, she became a fixture on cable television as a political commentator.
