Joshua Jackson recently opened up about his current dynamic with his ex-girlfriend and Dawson’s Creek costar, Katie Holmes. The Doctor Odyssey star was on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Dinner’s on Me podcast when he reflected upon his relationship with his former lover and other castmates from the hit teen drama series.

Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson reportedly met for the first time on the set of Dawson’s Creek in 1997, when the first season was shot. The costars soon started dating but parted ways within a year while staying friends. Katie Holmes revealed some details about her “first love” in her Rolling Stone cover story (published in September 1998).

The Batman Begins actress didn’t mention Joshua’s name but seemingly confirmed the reported relationship and eventual break-up. She told the Rolling Stone magazine,

“I’m just going to say that I met somebody last year [1997]. I fell in love, I had my first love, and it was something so incredible and indescribable that I will treasure it always. And that I feel so fortunate because he’s now one of my best friends. It’s weird, it’s almost like a Dawson-and-Joey type thing now.”

Katie added,

“He’s been in the business so long, and he’s really helped me. I respect him as a friend and as a professional.”

The off-screen romance between Joshua Jackson and Katie Holmes seemingly ended during the first two seasons (1997-98). Their respective characters, Pacey Witter and Joey Potter, coincidentally started dating on and off after the third season until the finale.

Dawson's Creek ended more than two decades ago, but Jackson and Holmes still share a close relationship. The Fatal Attraction actor recently talked about his connection with his costars from the show, including Katie, while he addressed James Van Der Beek’s battle with cancer.

Joshua Jackson mentions being close to Katie Holmes even more than two decades after Dawson’s Creek’s conclusion

The Karate Kid: Legends actor spoke about many things on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s podcast. Ferguson then asked about Jackson’s dynamic with his castmates from Dawson’s Creek while correlating it with his bond with the Modern Family costars.

Joshua addressed James Van Der Beek’s health struggles, claiming how he has been an “absentee partner,” but his female costars have supported him.

“James is going through something really, truly terrible right now. And the… And I wish I could take credit for this, but I was kind of the absentee partner here, but the girls all got together and we're like, we need to do something to help this guy out.”

Joshua Jackson then mentioned that Busy Phillips and Michelle Williams share a great bond, while he is closer to Katie Holmes. The Mighty Ducks actor then explained the relationship he has with his costar.

“Busy and Michelle are very, very close, and Katie and I are very close. But whether we're… I'm sure it's the same with your cast. Sometimes it's not a daily call, sometimes it's not a weekly or a monthly or even a half yearly call.”

Jackson added,

“But when you're together, A, there's always that like, I know you know. And B, there is, you know, these moments, like these major moments in life are, like, other than your husband, there's probably no other people in your life that you are that forged to. Because you had to go through good and bad and happy and f**k you and don't talk to me and I love you.”

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who also shares a similar dynamic with his Modern Family castmates, called Joshua Jackson “very fortunate” for having “a group of people that seemed like really good humans” as his costars.
