Most people know Fran Drescher as the titular character of the popular show "The Nanny". But in 2021, she first took on a new role as the new President of SAG-AFTRA.

Drescher who has been involved in activism throughout her career, led the United for Strength Slate faction during the SAG-AFTRA elections. Drescher defeated actor Mathew Modine, who represented the Membership First Slate faction by a narrow gap of 4 percent. She succeeded actress, Gabrielle Carteris who had held the position since 2016. However, her own running mate, Anthony Rapper was defeated by Joely Fisher for the role of secretary-treasurer.

Following her victory, she addressed SAG-AFTRA as its new leader, outlining her vision for the future:

"Together we will navigate through these troubled times of global health crisis and together we will rise up out of the melee to do what we do best, entertain and inform," she said. "Only as a united front will we have strength against the real opposition in order to achieve what we all want: more benefits, stronger contracts, and better protections. Let us lock elbows and together show up with strength at the negotiating table!"

In June 2023, shortly after the Emmy nominations were announced, Drescher declared that the union had decided to go on strike.

"We are the victims here. We are being victimized by a very greedy entity. I am shocked by the way the people that we have been in business with are treating us. I cannot believe it, quite frankly: How far apart we are on so many things. How they plead poverty, that they're losing money left and right when giving hundreds of millions of dollars to their CEOs. It is disgusting." Drescher said in her address during the conference.

Amidst the chaos of the ongoing strike, both Drescher and Fisher were once again reelected to their respective roles, as President and Secretary-treasurer.

In her re-election speech, the "Happily Divorced" star said:

“I am honored to serve my union as president for another term. Much has been accomplished in the past two years but I feel great optimism that the next two will be our greatest ever. As we let go of tribalism and gain more empathy for one another, as we realize that with each experience comes opportunity to better ourselves on our journey of self-refinement, we will also enter a golden age for SAG-AFTRA.”
