Game of Thrones star, Bella Ramsey, came out as non-binary and gender-fluid in January 2023. While speaking to The Observer in a recent interview, Ramsey revealed that they somewhat regret making the news public, two years after their announcement.

"Part of me looks back and I wish that I didn't, because I didn't want it to become a headline and a big thing. And obviously it was going to, and I didn't really understand that at the time. And I wasn't really prepared for that. But on the other hand, people have said to me that it's been very helpful for them seeing some presentation."

They called the experience of coming out as gender-binary as a "mixed bag",

"So it's been a mixed bag, but overall, I think it was a good thing, just for me living more freely, without feeling like I'm keeping a secret."

Ramsey also insisted that while they are happy to talk about their gender identity, they don't want it to "be the focus".

More about Bella Ramsey's announcement

In January 2023, ahead of their series The Last of Us' debut, Bella Ramsey sat down with The New York Times in an interview that was published online, on how they identify themselves.

"I guess my gender has always been very fluid. Someone would call me 'she' or 'her' and I wouldn't think about it, but I knew that if someone called me 'he' it was a bit exciting."

Ramsey said they would check "non-binary" for their pronouns, explaining that they are "very much just a person." The star also mentioned that being "gendered" isn't something they "particularly like" and "really couldn't care less" when it came to pronouns.

Last month, while speaking to Vogue about navigating gender identity, the star revealed that it has been tough for them, and they're still figuring things out. Bella also added that they don't have the "privilege" of exploring their identity in private.

"Part of the job of being an actor is that you're supposed to have an answer to every question that people ask you. But actually the answer can be: 'I don't know and I'm not ready to talk about that.'"

Bella Ramsey then highlighted the difficulties of exploring identity in person as mentioned that if someone recognises them on the street, it would be talked about if someone thinks they're "presenting differently" and takes a photo. Bella Ramsey is known for playing Ellie Williams in The Last of Us and Lyanna Mormont in Seasons 6-8 of Game of Thrones.
