Meghan Markle reveals the "life or death" scare that she faced while giving birth and yes, it does sound a little scary!
During the Tuesday episode of the Confessions of a Female Founder, Markle and her first guest on the podcast, Whitney Wolfe Herd, talked about both of them having postpartum preeclampsia while giving birth to their children.
According to Mayoclinic, Postpartum Preeclampsia is a rare but serious condition that occurs when a mother has high protein in her urine and high blood pressure while giving birth to her child.
As per Page Six, The Duchess of Sussex explained the condition and said that it is characterized by blood pressure and excess protein in the urine while delivering a child. Markle further revealed that the condition is rare and scary:
"It’s so rare and so scary. You’re still trying to juggle all of these things, and the world doesn’t know what’s happening quietly,” recalled the Duchess. “And in the quiet, you’re still trying to show up for people – mostly for your children — but those things are huge medical scares."
Markle did not specify whether she suffered from postpartum preeclampsia during the birth of Archie, her 5-year-old son, or her 3-year-old daughter. Lilibet. She also shared about how it is to be a working mom while raising Prince Harry's two children:
"[I became a parent] in the pandemic, post-pandemic culture where there is so much working from home,” Markle recalled. “I don’t leave the house to go to an office. My office is here."
"Lili … only has a half day in preschool. If she wakes up [from her nap] and wants to find me, she knows where to find me, even if my door is closed to the office,” the “Deal or No Deal” alum continued. “She’ll be sitting there on my lap during one of these meetings with a grid of all the executives."
She further explained that Lilibet and Archie's help add a fresh perspective to her brand, As Ever.
After Markle's $20 million Spotify run with Archetypes which was not much of a hit, she announced her new podcast through Lemonada Media. The first episode comes after she drops her merchandise from her latest lifestyle brand which she has also mentioned in her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan.
More about Postpartum Preeclampsia
As per Mayoclinic, most cases of this condition develop within 48 hours of childbirth. However, sometimes, the condition can develop after six weeks of childbirth and is referred to as late postpartum preeclampsia. The condition requires immediate treatment and if left unattended can cause further complications such as seizures.
It might be difficult to detect the condition on its own. While many women cannot identify the symptoms of the condition on their own, some of the symptoms of the condition include severe headaches, changes in vision or blurred vision, nausea and vomiting, shortness of breath, high blood pressure, and excess protein in the urine.
It is advised to seek immediate medical care in case of any symptoms of the condition.
