On 25th December 2024, the world mourned the loss of Dulce Cantante, a celebrated Mexican singer and actress known for her immense contributions to the Spanish music industry. Dulce died at the age of 69 due to complications from a pleuropulmonary decortication surgery done in early December.
Pleuropulmonary decortication is a surgical intervention for pleural mesothelioma, which is a type of cancer that attacks and damages the tissues of the lungs (called the pleura). The goal of the procedure is to relieve symptoms and to improve lung function.
The affected pleura, which are found in the membranous layers around the lungs, are gently removed during the surgery. It’s a complicated procedure which can harm the blood vessels and heart.
Dulce announced on social media in early December that she had been hospitalized and would have to reschedule concert dates for her 2024 tour. She had pleuropulmonary decortication on December 5 because of severe lung complications as a result of thickened scar tissue on her pleura (Just Jared).
On Christmas day, her family confirmed the heartbreaking news with a public statement.
“With deep pain and sadness, we confirm the death of our dear Dulce, an exceptional artist and wonderful person who left an unforgettable memory in the hearts of everyone she knew."
