Peter Engel, the renowned television producer whose work includes Saved by the Bell among other popular teen sitcoms, passed away on March 5, 2024, at the age of 88.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Engel was one of the architects of youth oriented television in the late 20th century, particularly through his work on NBC’s Saturday morning schedule.

Peter Engel worked in the television industry for many decades, achieving critical acclaim and financial rewards. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Peter Engel had a net worth estimated at $50 million at the time of death.

Much of his fortune came from his years in television production, notably through Saved by the Bell and its spin-offs. He was also instrumental in the production of numerous other teen-oriented sitcoms for NBC, as well as the reality-based competition show, Last Comic Standing.

During his career, Engel was involved in creating more than 1,000 television episodes. His work on children's and family television programming secured him a place in the Gold Circle of National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2023.

Peter Engel was born in 1936 in Manhattan, New York, and started his television career after graduating from New York University. After starting in the industry as a page at NBC’s 30 Rockefeller Plaza, he moved into producing.

Engel initially made a name in the 1970s as executive producer on The Ice Palace and the daytime soap opera How to Survive a Marriage, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

His best phase started in the late eighties with Good Morning, Miss Bliss, which would eventually be re-titled as Saved by the Bell. In its original stint, the show aired as Good Morning, Miss Bliss from 1989 to 1989, and then ran as Saved by the Bell from 1989 to 1993.

After the success of Saved by the Bell, Engel went on to create spin-offs of the show. These were Saved by the Bell: The College Years (1993–1994) and Saved by the Bell: The New Class (1993–2000).

Through his company, Peter Engel Productions, he produced several other teen-oriented NBC sitcoms such as California Dreams (1992–1996), USA High (1997–1999), Hang Time (1995–2000), Malibu, CA (1998–2000), and One World (1998–2001), besides the sitcom City Guys (1997–2001).

Besides scripted TV, Peter Engel was also an executive producer of Last Comic Standing, a stand-up comedy talent hunt show that ran from 2003 to 2015, according to IMDb. He received a Primetime Emmy nomination for his work on the show in 2004.
