Nikki Glaser recently hosted the 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, which aired on Jan 5, 2025. During the ceremony, Glaser took shots at many individuals with jokes at their expense.
The comedian’s statements about Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is now facing serious criminal charges, also incited outrage from viewers, victims’ advocates, and those representing some of the accusers against Combs.
According to Yahoo Entertainment, some critics deemed the jokes “insensitive” and “gross,” claiming that they downplayed the allegations against the rapper.
In her opening remarks, Nikki Glaser quoted from Zendaya’s film Challengers, describing it as “more sexually charged than Diddy’s credit card.” The audience's favorable response led her on, as she added another quip about Diddy’s infamous “freak offs” gatherings that have been linked to his criminal lifestyle.
Glaser said:
"The afterparty isn’t going to be as good this year. A Stanley Tucci freak-off doesn’t have the same ring to it. No baby oil this year, just lots of olive oil."
Lawyers who represent Diddy’s accusers expressed their dissatisfaction. Ariel Mitchell, a lawyer representing some of the victims, said in a statement to TMZ how making light of such an ugly situation causes so many victims of sexual assault to not come forward and report their abuse.
According to an article by the Billboard, another victims’ attorney, Tyrone Blackburn, called the comedic tone that Glaser took "disgusting.” He said:
"Expect a comedian of Nikki’s success to be skilled enough to find humor that doesn’t make light of drugging and rape."
A look at Diddy’s legal troubles amidst Nikki Glaser's controversial monologue
In September, Sean Diddy Combs was arrested on RICO, sex trafficking, and other related charges. Prosecutors accuse Combs of running a criminal enterprise that preyed on women using violence, harassment, and financial control.
The indictment also contained new details about his parties, known as "freak offs," which included abusive behavior towards women. Combs is being held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. His trials are said to begin in May 2025.
Following the backlash, Nikki Glaser made an appearance on Howard Stern’s Sirius XM show to address the controversy and shared more jokes that were cut from the Golden Globes monologue. One of these scrapped lines included: "This is the last time all of you will be in the same room together until the Diddy trial."
In the interview, Nikki Glaser stated how there’s a very thin line between what's right and what's wrong when it comes to comedy related to such sensitive topics.
