Michelle Obama recently opened up about her marriage with former President Barak Obama on the newly launched IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson podcast.
Co-hosted with her brother, Craig Robinson, the podcast features transparent conversations about relationships, parenting and real life.
Across the first two episodes, the former first lady shared information about her husband, showcasing his quirks and strengths, and thanked her brother for helping her through her years at the White House.
At one point, Michelle Obama quipped that being on time was something her husband learned after they got together. She said that she and Craig were raised to have a strict sense of time, but her husband on the other hand had issues with the idea of being prepared a little early.
"I got this husband who's like, when it's time to leave, it's three o'clock, he's getting up and going to the bathroom! And I was like, 'Dude, dude, like three o'clock departure means you've done all that,' you know?"
Though Michelle did not comment on any recent speculation about her relationship, she did address the difficulty of being in a high-profile marriage.
She stated that it was difficult for her to maintain strong bonds with her friends and family. On the other hand, she joked that Barack Obama would make little to no effort to make friends or maintain interest in other relationships.
She said the former president would spend five hours playing golf with his friends and still not know much about them.
"Takes five hours," but when she asks how someone is when he gets home, his response is, 'He's good.'"
More about Michelle Obama’s brother’s role in Barack Obama’s Presidential Run
During the podcast, Michelle Obama said she initially opposed Barack Obama's running for president. Her reaction to the idea was “crazy.” She mentioned that her brother Craig was responsible for changing her mind.
Barack Obama requested Craig's support to help sway Michelle. He said Barack approached him, saying:
"Barack came to me and he's like, 'I can't convince your sister to go along with this,'"
After discussions with Michelle and their mother, Marian Robinson, Craig finally helped her understand the value of supporting Barack’s ambitions.
"I said, 'If we can get mom on this, our mom, Marian Robinson, if we can get her on board for this—which she was not on board for it—we might have a chance of getting Meech on,'"
She said one of the first pieces of advice Craig gave her once Barack won the 2008 election was “no new friends.” During a segment, Michelle Obama reflected on how her friendships had changed, saying her relationships had “morphed” during her husband’s presidency.
