NBA star Kevin Love hosted a benefit dinner at the soon-to-be-opened Maple & Ash along with his wife, Kate Love, and Chef Danny Grant, raising $500,000 for the Kevin Love Fund to support mental health initiatives in South Florida. Kevin Love, an NBA player for the Miami Heat, has openly discussed his own mental health struggles, particularly anxiety, on multiple occasions.

One thing I love about the restaurant industry is the opportunity to enjoy and celebrate food, and tonight was even more meaningful because it supported a cause I deeply care about...Hosting this benefit dinner was truly special, and I couldn't imagine a better way to introduce Maple & Ash to Miami. - Kevin Love as reported by Newsweek

The benefit dinner was held on March 9, and, according to reports, 80 people attended, including key figures of the Miami Heat team, such as owner Micky Arison, president Pat Riley, and Alonzo Mourning, as well as other well-known figures like Mike McDaniel (head coach of the Miami Dolphins), David Gregory, and more.

Guests indulged in a menu curated by Michelin-starred chef Danny Grant. According to a Newsweek report, the menu included wine, "fire-roasted seafood, steak, a caviar bump station, Wagyu beef carpaccio, ice cream sundae towers," and more.

On March 6, 2018, in a blog post on The Players' Tribune, Kevin Love, a 36-year-old professional basketball player, talked about mental health issues and his perception of these issues as a man. He described in detail the first time he experienced a panic attack—during a home game against the Hawks in November 2017—and how it changed his understanding of mental health.

so for 29 years, I thought about mental health as someone else’s problem. Sure, I knew on some level that some people benefited from asking for help or opening up. I just never thought it was for me. To me, it was a form of weakness that could derail my success in sports or make me seem weird or different...Then came the panic attack.

After the panic attack, he started reflecting on why it happened, why he was relieved that nobody knew about it, and many other questions that led him to finally seek help and see a therapist. Seeking therapy helped him understand himself more than he had ever imagined, especially since he had mostly avoided talking to people about anything deep and personal—except basketball.

About two years ago, in an interview with the Child Mind Institute as part of May's Mental Health Awareness Month, the NBA star discussed his experiences with anxiety. He admitted to initially staying silent about his struggles, feeling like an "imposter," and shared advice for young athletes dealing with anxiety.

According to the Kevin Love Fund's official website, it was established in 2018 to "inspire people to live their healthiest lives by creating equity between mental and physical health."
