Rapper Cam’ron Giles recently reflected on his interaction with rapper Jay-Z, also known as Shawn Corey Carter following their reunion on stage during the Roc Nation founder’s 2019 B-sides concert.
On his new YouTube show, Talk With Flee, Cam’ron recounted the night's events when he performed Welcome to New York with the rapper, despite their past tensions. After the show, Jay-Z texted him, saying,
“Yo, that was dope last night.”
Although Cam’ron agreed, he described a message he received as puzzling. After expressing his gratitude for putting their past issues behind them, Shawn Carter reportedly commented about how fake conflicts can slow progress.
Cam’ron admitted he wasn’t sure how to interpret the message, though he replied with an appreciation for the opportunities he, Dame Dash, and Biggs provided early in his career.
Despite feeling the message was odd, Cam’ron clarified he held no resentment but still found the exchange unusual. While speaking about his present relationship with the Brooklyn’s Finest musician, he said,
“I haven’t seen or spoke to Jay-Z since then. I respect the hustler in Jay Z, I respect the music he does. Are we good? I hope we good! I don’t know. If I see him and we speak, cool. If not, it’s not gonna make or break what I got going on.”
Nonetheless, he addressed the possibility of collaborating with the rapper, noting that music isn’t his full-time focus anymore, nor is it for Shawn Carter. While it was not something he was currently considering, he expressed respect for the Empire State of Mind singer’s business ventures.
Cam’ron backlashed Jay-Z in his 2006 song
In the 2006 track You Gotta Love It, Giles took a direct jab at Jay-Z, accusing him of exploiting Biggie’s work for personal gain. Shawn Carter later responded to the feud and acknowledged his role in helping others build wealth in his verse on Drake’s Pound Cake, listing various figures, including Cam'ron, who had earned millions.
In turn, Cam'ron fired back in his track Come and Talk to Me, asserting that he had made his own money before ever meeting the rapper. He also made a few comments while speaking on the It Is What It Is podcast in June 2024 where he said,
“I am not saying he doesn’t, he is not a hip-hop historian, he doesn’t know about hip-hop. Listen, he had won a Writer’s Guild award or some type of award and he named probably every rapper from 1978 to 2014 or 15 whenever he won the award like every rapper in between that time.”
He continued,
“I believe that Jay-Z to me my personal opinion is not in love with hip-hop. I think he likes hip-hop a lot. I think he likes money more and opportunities to take his brand to the next level and some of the stuff that may have been going on in hip-hop 50 may have not been up his alley.”
In 2002, Cam'ron was named V.P. of Roc-A-Fella, but Shawn Carter did not approve it. However, in 2022, Cam’ron suggested that he and Jay-Z had quietly resolved their issues.
