This most recent apology follows Emilia Pérez director Jacques Audiard's February 5 interview with Deadline, in which he criticized Karla Sofia Gascon's handling of the matter and called her actions "self-destructive."
Audiard's comments heightened the debate around Gascon's previous online remarks, especially those involving her co-stars Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña.
When previous tweets credited to Gascón reappeared, some of which allegedly continued derogatory statements about Islam, George Floyd and her co-star Gomez, the debate broke out.
In 2022, one such remark allegedly called Gomez a "rich rat". Since then, the actress has insisted that some of the resurfaced posts were either fake or misunderstood.
Director Jacques Audiard Condemns Karla Sofia Gascón's actions
Jacques Audiard publicly questioned Karla Sofia Gascón's behavior in an interview with Deadline, voicing shock at her actions and their possible effects on the cast and crew of the movie.
Audiard asked,
“Why is she harming herself? Why? I don’t understand it, and what I don’t understand about this too is why she’s harming people who were very close to her.”

The critically praised movie's director continued by highlighting the toll the circumstances were having on the Emilia Pérez team. He went on to say,
“I’m thinking of myself, I’m thinking of Zoe and Selena. I just don’t understand why she’s continuing to harm us.”
Saldaña in particular, has responded to the growing scandal, as have Karla Sofia Gascón's co-stars. Saldaña, who is up for Best Supporting Actress, called the situation ''sad'' and "disappointing" in an interview with Variety.
She said,
“Time and time again, that’s the word because that is the sentiment that has been living in my chest since everything happened. I’m also disappointed. I can’t speak for other people’s actions. All I can attest to is my experience, and never in a million years did I ever believe that we would be here.”
Although Saldaña refrained from directly denouncing Gascón, she did make it apparent that the drama that was developing had clouded what should have been a celebration of their diligence on Emilia Pérez.
Gascon's Instagram Statement: ''Hoping My Silence Will Allow the Film to be Appreciated''
In an apparent attempt to disassociate herself from the issue and draw attention to the film's artistic value, Karla Sofia Gascón posted a new statement on Instagram on February 6 in response to the growing criticism.
She wrote,
“Following Jacques’ interview that I understand, I decided, for the film, for Jacques, for the cast, for the incredible crew who deserves it, for the beautiful adventure we all had together, to let the work talk for itself, hoping my silence will allow the film to be appreciated for what it is, a beautiful ode to love and difference.”
Karla Sofia Gascón included a picture of the Emilia Pérez cast and crew during the movie's 2024 Cannes Film Festival debut, which first solidified the movie's standing as a top candidate for an award with the above caption.
She ended the caption with an apology,
“I sincerely apologize to everyone who has been hurt along the way.”
Impact on Emilia Pérez's Oscar Prospect
With 13 nominations overall, including Best Actress for Gascón, Emilia Pérez has become one of the most nominated films at the 2025 Academy Awards, and the controversy surrounding Gascón comes at a crucial time for the movie. However, there are worries that the scandal may hurt the movie's prospects in important categories because it is overshadowing its promotional efforts.
Public opinion frequently influences award campaigns, and the rediscovered tweets, together with Audiard's remarks, have diverted attention from the movie's creative accomplishments. Given that Oscar voters are still completing their final ballots, the controversy's timing might be detrimental.
The movie is still a serious candidate in spite of the criticism, especially in categories that honor its director and acting. The subsequent issue has compounded the story of Karla Sofia Gascón's historic nomination as the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards.
