What happened between Ray J and Brandy? Singer calls out estranged sister on Instagram 

The celebrity sibling duo, Ray J and Brandy, are not as close as they once were. On April 9, Ray J called out his sister, Brandy, in an Instagram story alongside screenshots of the duo’s text chat. In addition to this, the gap in their relationship has been addressed by Ray J a few times in several interviews and podcast appearances.

Ray J took to his Instagram stories to share a screenshot of the chat when Brandy expressed her disappointment in her brother. In the screenshot, Brandy shared a link to Ray’s conversation with live-streamer Kai Cenat and wrote to her brother,

“Come on Ray? What’s going on with you? You’re so much better than this!!”

Brandy’s disappointment in Ray seems to have bothered the reality television star, who explained his position in a long message to fans and his family alongside the screenshot. Ray revealed that he finds it difficult to manage the expectations of his family. He also briefly mentioned his struggles with mental health, and even apologized to his sister and mother.

Ray wrote,

“My sister hates who I am! - And all I'm doing is being Myself!, I don't know how to be better than who I am. I tried. But I get depressed trying to change when I don't have my wife anymore and I have NO STABILITY!! I'm sorry to my sister for who I am. And my mom. - I don't give a F about nobody elses feelings- but when it's my family it makes me feel alone.”

Ray also spoke about trying hard to be a good father to his kids, writing,

“SO I TURN UP MORE!! - STAY TUNED - TO MY KIDS WHO MIGHT SEE THIS LATER WHEN THEY ARE OLDER - JUST KNOW I WORK HARD FOR YOU AND ONLY YOU!! - IF IT WASNT FOR YOU MELODY AND EPIK I WOULDVE BEEN LOCKED UP OR DEAD!! - IM CRASHING OUT TONIGHT”

Ray J and Brandy’s relationship explored

Brandy rose to fame with her debut album, Brandy, which was released in 1994. She was also featured in a starring role in the UPN sitcom Moesha, according to Allmusic.

Complex notes that Ray J, who was a child actor and appeared in shows such as The Sinbad Show, was a staple alongside his older sister Brandy who had become an R&B sensation of the 90s. As per the outlet, Ray would frequent as an extra on Brandy’s shows and always appear alongside his sister on red carpets.

Ray began his musical journey when he released his debut album, Everything You Want, in 1997, which peaked at no. 56 on the Billboard charts.

Their directions took different turns when Ray released an ad*lt home movie with Kim Kardashian, causing somewhat of a scandal, according to Complex. Ray went on to star in reality television shows such as For The Love of Ray J and Love & Hip Hop Hollywood.

In 2022, Ray faced backlash on social media over a tattoo of Brandy’s face that he got on his leg, as per People Magazine. The outlet reported that while Brandy confessed that she didn’t initially understand the tattoo, it later grew on her when Ray explained it to her.

During a podcast appearance in 2024, Ray briefly addressed his relationship with Brandy, revealing the siblings had grown apart, per Essence. He spoke candidly on the Club Shay Shay podcast, revealing,

“It’s just, Brandy’s goals since the beginning have been totally different from [mine].”

Continuing, Ray shared that he wasn’t invited to some of his sister’s events recently. He said,

“And lately even certain events I think they been having…I haven’t got the invite, and I’m good with that. But I understand why. It’s just a lot of the sh-t I’m doing now is just a little more left field, a little more outrageous, a little louder. A little more dramatic. A tad bit distasteful at times.”

In the text message shared by Ray on his Instagram stories, Brandy was referring to Ray’s conversations with Kai Cenat on the latter’s livestream, while expressing disappointment in her brother’s choices. The conversation in question was related to Ray telling Cenat that he would like to join in on the streamer’s live shows for a sleepover. According to Complex, Ray’s conversation with Cenat led to an embarrassing misunderstanding.

While Brandy hasn’t responded publicly to Ray J’s Instagram story yet, it remains unclear whether the sibling duo will be able to repair their relationship or not.
