Mindy Kaling recently received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and she had her best friend, BJ Novak, by her side. Kaling mentioned how Novak, who is also the godfather to her kids, is an integral and important part of her family. Novak, on the other hand, didn't forget to point out how Kaling is a great mother and a friend, and her talent is endless.
While the two The Office alumni call each other friends, their fans always mention how they want to see them together as a couple. However, there was a time when Novak and Kaling were together, but their relationship was much like their onscreen characters Kelly Kapoor and Ryan Howard.
Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak first met while writing and filming The Office in 2004. They both were 24 years old and soon fell for each other. The duo has previously admitted that their relationship began after their characters started dating on screen.
In a 2012 interview with Vulture, Novak tried to explain the dynamics of his relationship with Kaling and said:
"We were never really dating, we were never really not dating. We didn't know. No one knew. All you'd know for sure is that you'd always find one of us next to the other, even if we weren't getting along."
He also confirmed how the ups and downs in Kelly Kapoor and Ryan Howard's relationship on the sitcom were inspired by their real-life arguments.
Despite their relationship ending, the two never stopped being each other's support systems. In 2014, during an interview on The Howard Stern Show, The Mindy Project star confirmed that it was Novak who broke up. She admitted to being "so sad, not angry, sad" due to their breakup. However, this didn't stop them from being best buddies.
Kaling also confirmed that she and Novak would not rekindle their romantic relationship. Both the actors do not shy away from being each other's dates at award functions. Novak also became the godfather of Kaling's children. She has three kids and has never revealed the name of their father.
BJ Novak heaps praises on Mindy Kaling
BJ Novak supported Mindy Kaling as she unraveled her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. During his speech, Novak heaped praises on Kaling, saying:
"Mindy respects and understands [fame] in a very intuitive way because in addition to being a brilliant and wildly successful showrunner, an incredible mother of three, a deep and caring daughter and friend and mentor to so many."

Concluding his speech, Novak said how Mindy deserved her star on the walk as she is "a person who means so much to so many on the Hollywood Walk of Fame."
