Comedian and actor Jo Koy, aka Joseph Glenn Herbert, shared his experience while traveling on a Philippine Airlines flight. After the flight took off, it had to make an emergency landing in Tokyo because of an electrical fire.
He shared an Instagram post on April 9, 2025, describing the situation and thanking the staff. Jo Koy captioned the post as follows:
“We were on our way back to L.A. from Philippines when the entire cabin filled with smoke (due to electrical fire) we then made an emergency landing into Tokyo Japan. Hats off to the @flypal flight attendants and pilots they were more than great. Ps. Tell everyone you love them everyday. Mahal kita.”
Jo Koy went on to praise the flight attendants, saying:
“The flight attendants on Philippines Airlines were amazing. You were amazing above and beyond. You were pros. Thank you for remaining calm in a situation that could have went South fast but we are safe and we are in Tokyo and our next flight out is in nine hours.”
According to People Magazine, Flight PR102, which departed Manila for Los Angeles on April 9, 2025, had to make an emergency landing at Haneda Airport early the next morning due to smoke from one of the plane’s AC units.
A passenger said she woke up to a smell similar to burning plastic, and others mentioned that the smoke irritated their eyes and throats. Passengers were given wet towels, and they also used eye masks for protection. Everyone on board, including over 350 passengers and crew, landed safely.
Jo Koy received backlash following his 2024 Golden Globes hosting
In October 2016, Jo Koy shared a throwback photo of him and his sister from the past, when he almost lost his leg in an accident. He also thanked his sister Rowena, who brought him Burger King items while he was at the hospital. Koy wrote:
“#tbt to when i almost lost my leg in a dirt bike accident. In the hospital for a few months. My sister Rowena already left the house at 18. She had a full time job at wendys and she brought me BK almost everyday. I Love you ween.”
Last year, Jo Koy hosted the 81st Golden Globes Awards. His opening monologue did not seem to have pleased many. According to The Guardian, he released a statement following the alleged backlash saying he had a good time and considered it a memorable experience, even though it was a challenging one.
He admitted the job was difficult and, despite being a stand-up comedian, hosting required a completely different approach. With only ten days to prepare the monologue, it felt like an intense learning experience to him. Although he felt bad about how things turned out, he still appreciated the opportunity and enjoyed what he did.
During his time hosting, Jo Koy joked about Taylor Swift commenting that the Golden Globes aired after two football games and added that, unlike in the NFL, the awards show showed fewer camera shots of Swift.
