Tragedy struck the world of basketball after Latvian professional player Janis Timma was discovered dead at the age of 32 in Moscow.
Timma, who had a high-profile career internationally and in Europe, was found near a residential building in the Russian capital. Initial investigations indicate that the death appears to be a suicide, but authorities are still investigating the conditions of the incident, as per Essentially Sports.
A phone was found next to Janis Timma's body, a Russian report suggested. Suggesting that his death could have been tied to an effort to talk to his ex-wife, Anna Sedokova (Eurohoops).
Timma’s death made news beyond the basketball world. As reported by Essentially Sports, Shaquille O’Neal’s sons, Shareef O’Neal and Shaqir O’Neal, both paid tribute to him on social media.
Another Latvian player, Boston Celtics star Kristaps Porzingis, mourned on social media. Porzingis later wrote:
"Human connection is the cornerstone of our mental health. Please, let's look after one another. Rest in peace, JT."

Janis Timma’s stellar career in basketball
Timma started his basketball career in Latvia and developed into a young talent. In 2014, he made his senior debut for the Latvian national team and thereafter acquired a place in the squad. His 16-plus years of professional basketball career were remarkable.
Timma played for the senior men's national team at the 2013 EuroBasket, 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, and 2017 EuroBasket.
Timma was selected as the 60th overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2013 NBA Draft. He made his NBA professional debut during the 2021 NBA Summer League with the Orlando Magic.
Timma developed a successful overseas career, competing in Europe’s top leagues. He played for flashy teams like Olympiacos, Baskonia, and Khimki Moscow Region and won MVP in the Baltic Basketball League, as reported by Eurohoops.
In recent times he was signed with Spanish club Obradoiro CAB and was playing Russian basketball tournaments.
