Chef Carl Ruiz, had an unexpected death in 2019, at the age of 44. He was a close friend of Guy Fieri and often appeared on Food Network. Inspired by Cuban food and culture, the celebrity chef opened his own restaurant called La Cubana in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District.
He was a favourite among viewers of food television shows like Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, Guy's Grocery Games and Guy’s Ranch Kitchen.
Six years later, Guy Fieri paid a tribute to his friend, for what would have been Carl’s 50th Birthday. He uploaded a special Instagram post which included multiple pictures and stories of their time together. Many fans were moved by the message and honoured Carl Ruiz on social media.
What happened to chef Carl Ruiz?
Carl Ruiz died in his sleep on September 21, 2019. His death was caused by atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease,
"The buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on the artery walls," per Mayo Clinic.
Before his unexpected death, Ruiz had spent his day in Maryland -- eating at restaurants in Baltimore and Harford County.

Ruiz shared on X, formerly known as twitter, as he ate at Baltimore's famous Chaps Pit Beef. Chaps Pit Beef was also named, Maryland's Best Fast Food by Food & Wine Magazine.
La Cubana had shared with CBS News that it will establish The Carl Ruiz Scholarship Foundation in his honor. The restaurant said that it was "deeply saddened" by the news of Carl's death.
"No words can fully express our sadness at the sudden loss of our dear friend and brother. Beyond his immense culinary talent, Carl's larger-than-life personality never failed to entertain, enlighten, and uplift every person he encountered along his #Ruizing adventures,"
La Cubana shared in an Instagram post. The caption continued,
"His fierce intellect and infectious humor knew no bounds. He was a mighty force of down home Cuban cuisine, and lived life to the fullest, just as he cooked—with “dancing always” as the most important ingredient."

Fieri shared a carousel of pictures with Ruiz on Instagram saying,
Happy 50th birthday to my brother/friend/chef , Carl “The Cuban” Ruiz, Miss you my brutha, RIP
His tribute started a wave of support as fans honored and celebrated Ruiz's legacy.
"He was The best RIP" one user commented.
"Carl was a part of everyone’s family. You just felt like he was the favorite uncle. Like we all knew him personally. This one still hurts. RIP" another shared their memory.
Another user reminisced,
"Loved that man immensely...I miss him on all of guys shows"

I’m heartbroken that my friend chef Carl Ruiz is gone. I have no words to describe what a great friend he was to me and my family. His ability to make me laugh and smile under any circumstances was only outshined by his talent as a chef.
He continued, stating Carl was special as
Over the years, I’ve met a lot of great people but a friend like Carl is one in a hundred million. Carl ’The Cuban’ Ruiz will forever live on in my heart and in those of all who loved him.
