Bobby Brown appeared on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, discussing industry, personal life, career, and more. During the conversation, the R&B icon was asked about the “closest thing to Michael [Jackson].” The two-time Grammy winner chose Chris Brown over Usher as the closest thing to MJ. Bobby Brown said,

“I would go with Chris Brown [...] Chris Brown is a dancer/singer/great entertainer. He goes out there and he does the ultimate, ultimate stuff on stage and… You just have to love it. Usher also. Usher is also a great entertainer, but I gotta go with Chris on being as close to Michael as anybody could ever get.”

Bobby Brown and Usher never had a public fallout, but according to Rico Love, they fought at a party in 2002. The record producer recounted the incident on Taxstone’s Tax Season podcast in an October 2016 episode.

Rico Love claimed that Bobby was intoxicated when the fight happened at his birthday party. He alleged that Brown initiated the argument, which became a physical altercation. Rico Love narrated,

“Usher went to the birthday party in LA. Bobby was drunk, talking some s**t to Usher. Usher thought he was joking. Bobby was dead a**, started pushing Usher in the chest, and he said, yeah, little n***, he put his arm around Usher, put him in the head lock, like, yeah, n***, don't ever disrespect me. I'm the king, you my son.”

Rico added,

“Ush kind of, like, pushed back, two-pieced Bobby Brown, quit. He did it so fast, everybody in the party thought they was play-fighting.”

Neither Bobby nor Usher ever acknowledged that the brawl ever happened. However, his comments on Club Shay Shay were not the first time Bobby Brown seemingly shaded Usher.

The 56-year-old singer, who has known Usher since he was a teenager, previously chose Chris Brown over the Hard II Love artist. Bobby also claimed that Chris reminded him of his younger self.

The Home Again singer might have picked Chris Brown over Usher, but he still had much to say about the latter. Bobby recounted how he had known the Yeah singer since he was a teen prodigy and how he made him feel proud. Brown to Sharpe,

“I've known Usher since he was 12… 11-12 years old and… Just just seeing his growth in the industry and seeing how well he holds himself up, how well he takes care of his business. I'm really proud of him.”

He also recalled how his security guard introduced him to a young Usher,

“I had a security guard who found Usher. And he brought him to the shows. He brought him to the studios. I had a studio in Atlanta Georgia , and he just was always around me. He brought him to be around me and to learn what this thing of ours is all about.”

During the conversation, Bobby also named SZA, Tems, Jazmine Sullivan, and Anthony Hamilton as his favorite modern artists. He also admitted that he did not like Britney Spears’ cover of My Prerogative. In his words, Brown claimed that “Britney Spears butchered ‘Prerogative.’”
