Bill Clinton became a vegan almost a decade ago
This was not the first time that Bill Clinton required medical attention. In 2004, he had a quadruple bypass surgery at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital followed by a similar heart-related procedure at the same hospital in 2010. During the second visit, two stents had to be inserted into his coronary artery.
During a CNN interview, the former President revealed that after the stents were inserted, he decided to live to see his grandchildren, and turned to a vegan way of life. He said:
"So, I just went all the way. Now, I try to eat some salmon once a week but I don’t miss any of that. Getting rid of the dairy was great, getting rid of the meat was (great). I just don’t miss it. Not everybody is as vulnerable to this as I am."
He continued:
"All of us produce a certain amount of enzymes that destroys our own bad cholesterol. However much extra we produce determines how much we can ingest. And unfortunately, we can't measure it.”
In 2021, he was hospitalized in Los Angeles after he developed a urological infection.
AARP released an interview piece in 2013, in which it was mentioned that at 66, Bill Clinton maintained a rigorous travel and work schedule that often left younger staffers exhausted.
Despite dealing with heart disease and the challenges of aging, he altered his diet, cutting out meat, dairy, and fish, which helped him lose over 30 pounds, and sustain the weight loss. He felt significantly more energetic and healthier, crediting his dietary changes for the transformation.
