10-time WBNA All-Star Brittney Griner was forced to cancel a speaking engagement she was booked for just outside Washington, D.C.
Her move comes on the heels of a note she found near the entrance of her hotel room in National Harbor, Maryland. Brittney Griner was slated to speak at the Women Grow Leadership Summit this Monday, but she was forced to cancel when she received "threatening objects and words," the event organizers told attendees.
Per WUSA 9, the note had the words "G*y Baby Jail" on it and was seemingly written on a piece of duct tape. According to Know Your Meme, the term is used to refer to a "character or person trapped in a jail cell, box, or other punishment location."
It refers "to a situation in which a game becomes softlocked (a term for a game becoming stuck in a situation where progress is impossible and cannot be exited)."
Everything we know about the incident that shook Brittney Griner up
As published in a report from TMZ Sports, a statement from the police defines the term "G*y Baby Jail" as the following:
"Detectives have learned the phrase 'g*y baby jail' is commonly used as a video game reference. At the time the tape was located, a large convention was taking place at the G*ylord which attracts thousands of people, many with an interest in anime as well as video game enthusiasts. At this time, detectives have uncovered no link to or threat against the guest who located the tape."
Brittney Griner was reportedly expected to mint between $100,000 and $200,000 from speaking at the summit. Women Grow’s CEO Chanda Macias has since responded to the statement, calling the incident an “attack” on their community. She revealed that it was either a deliberate move to intimidate the player or a massive blunder by the hotel staff.
She also revealed that the organization is working closely with officials to uncover what transpired with the sportswoman, who is a vocal advocate of the LGBTQ+ community. The organization also expressed its support for Griner in a statement, emphasizing the importance of creating safe spaces for her during this time.
"We are actively working with the venue and authorities to investigate how this happened and hold those responsible accountable," Macias said. "The safety of every woman at this conference remains our top priority. Women Grow was founded on the belief that women should be able to lead without fear or intimidation. Our commitment to empowering women in cannabis is stronger than ever. We will not be silenced. We will continue on.”
Brittney Griner is a two-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, and she has been married to Cherelle Griner for 6 years. The two welcomed their first child just last year.
