Malcolm in the Middle star Erik Per Sullivan is not returning for Disney+’s revival. According to Variety, the former child actor who palyed Dewey in the Fox hit show for six seasons (between 2000-2006) was recast for the reboot.
Erik’s last appearance was in a Chace Crawford and 50 Cent starrer Twelve, which came out in 2010. Since then, the former actor has distanced himself from show business. Last year, Jane Kaczmarek, who played Dewey and his siblings’ mother, revealed that Erik Per Sullivan studies Victorian literature at a “prestigious American university.”
In an interview with Malcolm France, Kaczmarek spoke about her on-screen son,
“He’s well. He’s very, very well. We did Malcolm for seven years, he started at seven, he ended at 14. He wasn't interested in acting, at all. He goes to school at a very, very, very prestigious American university that he’s asked us all to be quiet about. And he loves Charles Dickens. He is doing graduate work in Victorian literature, Charles Dickens.”
Kaczmarek added how she admires Erik Per Sullivan for his decision to move away from the spotlight while saying,
“I think so many people think being in show business is just the greatest thing in the world, and it’s not for everybody, you know…”
Jane Kaczmarek called Erik Per Sullivan “a very grateful kid” while recounting a Malcolm in the Middle anecdote
Dewey is among the beloved characters from the classic sitcom. Jane Kaczmarek also fondly spoke about her on-screen son during her chat with Malcolm France. She added that Erik Per Sullivan is “a very grateful kid, for Dewey.” During the conversation, Jane also recounted the words of Malcolm in the Middle’s creator, Linwood Boomer,
“Whenever we were [they were] editing an episode. And they were like, umm, what should we do now? He said he always knew you could just cut to Dewey. And just show a shot of Dewey and the scene was gonna work. Because there was something about that kid that was just incredible.”
Erik Per Sullivan hasn’t been papped in years. One of his last videos on the internet was uploaded over a decade ago, where the former actor addresses a fan. At the time, he said:
“Hey, um Jasmine ... my name is Erik Per Sullivan and I just thought I'd say hi spontaneously because your uncle did not encourage this at all. He's a good guy! Um, yeah, I heard you like the show and I'm just sending greetings from where ever we are? Positano. Thanks! “
Caleb Ellsworth-Clark replaces Erik Per Sullivan as Dewey for Malcolm in the Middle revival
The primary cast from the original show, including Frankie Muniz, Jane Kaczmarek, Bryan Cranston, Christopher Masterson, and Justin Berfield, will be back for the reboot. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark will be the new addition to the cast, per Variety. The outlet reported that the Fargo actor will replace Erik Per Sullivan as Dewey.
The four-episode revival will also add Anthony Timpano, Vaughan Murrae, and Keeley Karsten to the cast. According to Variety, Timpano and Murrae will portray Malcolm’s siblings, while Karsten will play the titular character’s daughter. The shooting is likely to commence in April, as revealed by Frankie Muniz in January.
The 39-year-old actor and professional stock car racing racer told Fox Sports,
"We got the green light. We haven't filmed it yet. It's gonna make my April pretty interesting because I'll be commuting. They are working around my NASCAR schedule, which I think they told me, I was the first person that they ever had to work around cause normally like an actor is committed to the acting.”
The Breaking Bad star, Bryan Cranston, previously expressed his hopes for a reunion in 2016 during an interview with E! News in 2016.
