Conan O’Brien’s star is arguably at its peak, with the former late-night talk show host fresh off the heels of an impressive performance helming this year’s Academy Awards. Beloved to a generation for his work on The Simpsons, as well as his hit television shows, Conan is clearly taking in a well-deserved moment on the mountaintop.
On the latest episode of Conan Needs A Friend, O’Brien shared Tina Fey’s reaction to her husband’s revealing role in a sketch, while conversing with her longtime friend and fellow actress Amy Poehler. Fey was apparently furious at the time, and O'Brien recalled her exact response to her husband’s appearance in the segment,
"Tina had passed a monitor, and she went, 'That's my husband, you f---er. What have you done to him?'"
Cooler heads seem to have prevailed since the incident involving the Late Night with Conan O'Brien bit, but at one point, the tension was palpably clear.
Conan v Tina - The Jeff Richmond Skit Explained
When Fey’s husband Jeff Richmond and Conan first collaborated on a sketch, Conan recalled the extreme nature of Richmond’s character to Poehler,
"And I'm sorry, Jeff, but I immediately go to when we first used Jeff Richmond, and he played Cupid. He was in a diaper hanging on a rope with a bow and arrow and like some glitter in his hair and no shirt."
Conan elaborated that he "didn't know who Jeff was" when this initially took place, and when Tina passed by the monitor (as she was one of the guests on the same show), she saw Richmond "kind of just spinning at rehearsal awkwardly”. Her response was outwardly livid at the time as she voiced her displeasure at how her would-be husband was being treated.
The late-night legend and Fey went on to discuss the bit on Fey's first appearance as a guest on Late Night with Conan O’Brien in 2001. Only a short clip of the entire sketch aired during Fey’s one-on-one with Conan, where she jokingly addressed Richmond's appearance in the Cupid sketch,
"He's an actor, and he's actually done a few bits on your show. He actually did one this week."
She continued,
"This is who I'm marrying, me and him gonna make a baby some day!"
Fey clearly let go of any short-lived resentment toward Conan, but her initial reaction comes across as slightly harsh. Thankfully, it doesn’t appear that there is any bad blood between the two former SNL alums. She even went on to be a guest on Conan's podcast in 2019.
