President-elect Donald Trump bashed Governor Gavin Newsom after the governor called for a special legislative session to "Trump-proof" California. After Newsom said that he wants to safeguard California from Trump's future policies, post his victory in the presidential race, Donald, in a Truth Social post on November 8, said,
"Governor Gavin Newscum is trying to KILL our Nation's beautiful California. He is using the term "Trump-Proof" as a way of stopping all of the GREAT things that can be done to 'Make California Great Again."
Newsom is the first Governor to initiate a 'Trump-Proof' in the blue states. In a press conference this week, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker also expressed his wish to retaliate against Trump's policies.
More about David Newsom's special session to "Trump-Proof" California
On November 7, the governor of California announced a special session of the legislature to "safeguard the state's values and fundamental rights in the face of an incoming Trump administration."
Newsom noted that the session will kick off on December 2 and will take "expedited action" to "best protect California and its values from attacks" on LGBTQ rights and women's rights. Newsom also mentioned that the session would "provide additional resources" to the state's justice department and other agencies to "pursue robust affirmative litigation" against Donald Trump's potential unlawful administrative actions.
Gavin Newsom, in a statement, said,
"The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack - and we won't sit idle. California has faced this challenge before, and we know how to respond. We are prepared, and we will do everything necessary to ensure Californians have the support and resources they need to thrive."
Illinois' Governor JB Pritzker's chief of staff, Anna Caprara, revealed Illinois' plans to "Trump-Proof." The state said that Illinois is looking into legal protections for women who travel to the state to access reproductive care. Caprara added,
"We are literally going through Project 2025 to understand every element of what they might touch. Some of his work has been done or in the process for a while."
Assembly Republican leader James Gallagher, in a statement, bashed Newsom's efforts by calling his special session a "shameless political stunt." He added that the only problem the session will solve is "Gavin Newsom's insecurity and not enough people are paying attention to him."
In an interview in Orange County last Sunday, Gavin Newsom warned that California will deal with Trump differently than it did in his first term, which began in 2016.
