Demi Moore has bagged an Oscar nomination in the category of Best Actress in a Leading Role for portraying Elisabeth Sparkle in Coralie Fargaet's The Substance (2024), after having an illustrious career for over 40 years, is iconic for her work in films such as Ghost (1990), Indecent Proposal (1993), Striptease (1996) and G.I. Jane (1997). Demi Moore has also recently won the Golden Globe for Best Actress- Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, for the same film.
The Substance is a body-horror satirical film that serves as a critique of the toxic beauty standards placed on women and explores the politics of aging, body image, objectification of women's bodies, and sexism. It follows the plot of a once celebrated actress Elisabeth Sparkle (portrayed by Demi Moore), who is now reprimanded by the industry due to her aging, sets to create another younger version of herself named, Sue (portrayed by Margaret Qualley), by injecting a 'substance', and the disturbing consequences that follow.
What did Demi Moore say about her Oscar nomination for The Substance?
As per reports in the US Magazine, Demi Moore expresses her feelings about earning the Oscar nomination through her publicist whilst speaking to the US weekly. She mentions by saying:
"Being nominated for an Oscar is an incredible honor and these last few months have been beyond my wildest dreams,”
Demi Moore also expresses that she feels truly humbled, saying how it is not just for herself but also for what the film stands for, as she continues:
“Truly there are no words to fully express my joy and overwhelming gratitude for this recognition. Not only for me but for what this film represents. I am deeply humbled.”
Along with expressing feelings of joy and gratitude, she also talks about the impact of LA wildfires and expresses solidarity with people as she states:
"This is a time of incredible contrasts and right now, my heart is with my friends, family, neighbors, and community here in L.A."
“The fires have devastated so many lives but to see the way our community has united leaves me in awe of the resilience and compassion that defines us, and this moment is a reminder of how incredible we are when we stand together, she added.”
While speaking to Variety, Demi Moore throws light on the situation around her, and how she feels about the unprecedented times, as she talks about her conflicting feelings, in her statement:
"I don’t know that I’m quite in my body. Life has been full of contrast with all that’s been going on, such incredible highs and devastating lows. Last night a new fire broke out in Los Angeles, and I was on alert all night because it wasn’t that far from us. I’m feeling some deep humility on many, many levels."
The Substance has been nominated for the Oscars in 5 categories in total along with Demi Moore in the Best Actress nomination, which includes:

- Director Carolie Fargaet for Best Director
- Best Original Screenplay
- Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
