The former Suns star, Charles Barkley, has a long-standing beef with San Antonio women, which is a topic he's touched on repeatedly over the years in his public appearances. The former NBA icon and basketball analyst has often created a divide among his fans for referring to the ladies of the city as “big ol’ women.”
Despite the controversy spurred by his remarks against the women in San Antonio, Barkley continues with remarks in line with his typical on-air humor. The ex-Houston Rockets player was at the Capital One JamFest last weekend when he addressed the crowd. Charles Barkley concluded by reiterating:
“San Antonio, y'all put on a major, major, great show, and I wanna say this, thank you, thank you, thank you. And yes, y'all got some big b**ches here.”
Barkley’s comments were met with boos from the local crowd, though some attendees appeared to take them in stride. Before Charles attended the NCAA festivities in San Antonio, he posted about his visit and cheekily trolled the host city’s fans.
He posted a clip while enjoying churros and saying, “San Antonio, guess who’s coming to town?” Charles Barkley captioned the post with:
“I’m on my way, y’all 🤣”
Charles Barkley has frequently joked about San Antonio and churros on multiple occasions during his appearance on Inside the NBA

The TNT analyst referenced his comments from 2014 when he jokingly claimed that San Antonio has “some big ol’ women down there” because they consume churros. While many laughed along with Barkley, a section of fans also called him out for his comments.
Despite the backlash, the Inside the NBA analyst asserted during the show that he would never apologize for his remarks because he was just “joking around.” He stated:
“Some idiot in San Antonio started a blog [...] Listen, I’m just going to have fun on TV. You know I’m joking. I say San Antonio got a great organization. They got the best point guard. They got the greatest power forward ever. Some of you people don’t like my sense of humor, is what I gotta say. Turn off your damn television, I’m not going to change.”
He continued,
“They want me to apologize. That’s not gonna happen. [...] Y’all can write letters to your mama, your daddy, your uncle, I’m not… I’m going to have fun on television… You know that I’m joking around.”
A few years later, Charles jokingly apologized to the women in San Antonio and said,
“I wanna apologize to the women of San Antonio. Because Ernie, Ernie, I had Churros last night. I see what all the excitement is about. I had churros last night [...] Them churros good. I see why they got big ol’ women down there in San Antonio. Them churros are the bomb.”
Subsequently, Charles was reportedly asked to tone down his humor about San Antonio on Inside the NBA. According to TMZ, the ’93 NBA MVP appeared on the Grant & Danny show in 2021 and revealed that he was asked to cut down on making such jokes after an article was published about him. Barkley said:
“They're like, 'Charles, we got one lady wrote an article.' I'm like first of all, I didn't call anybody personally fat in San Antonio. I was just joking around and when this one lady wrote this article ... we've been having fun with this for probably 10, 15 years!”
Charles Barkley further blamed cancel culture and said,
“You can't even have fun nowadays without these jacka**es trying to get you canceled and things like that.”
The article Charles Barkley referenced was seemingly published on MYSA (MySanAntonio.com), which called out his years-long “fat-shaming shtick” on TNT.
