Drake and Ludacris, two of the industry's dominant artists, had a years-long feud in the 2010s. While it was resolved in 2017, Drake shared his reasons during his birthday, with the latter's Pimpin’ All Over The World blaring through the speakers.
He revealed that the beef stemmed from Ludacris dating his first girlfriend. In a clip circulating on X, the One Dance singer can be heard saying,
"I used to beef with Ludacris because he dated my first girlfriend, I swear to God. I used to have beef with Ludacris. Shoutout to Ludacris though.”
In the background, guests can be heard chuckling at the unexpected revelation.
Drake publicly declared "a lot of love" he has for Ludacris in 2017
The beef can be traced back to 2010, when Drake picked a fight with Ludacris for using the Supa Dupa flow that, back then, was only used by himself, Nicki Minaj, Big Sean, and other giants. He told AllHipHop at the time,
"I hate that rappers picked that flow up. I wish they had left that for people that know how to use it.”
Big Sean echoed the sentiments, and about a year later, Ludacris retaliated with Bada Boom. He didn't mention his adversary by name, though, as he rapped:
"Counterfeit rappers say I’m stealing they flows/But I can’t steal what you never made up, b****!"
Drake took about five years to shoot back as he dropped his money-making track How Bout Now. He name-dropped Ludacris, and his track alludes to his relationship with an anonymous woman. In retrospect, given the new tidbit of information, Drake may have been rapping about their shared ex-girlfriend:
"I used to always try and burn you CDs of my new sh*t/You be like 'Who's this?' I be like 'Me, girl,' You be like 'Oh, word, true sh*t?' Then ask if we could listen to Ludacris."
However, just that year, Ludacris confirmed that the two had set their differences aside. In speaking with The Breakfast Club, he revealed that Drake had “apologized to him like a man” before adding,
"I think there is a little bit of a true story behind that. His girl, at the time, with all due respect was probably doing a little bit more than that. It’s a true story and I think that’s why he said that.”
During his acceptance speech at the 2017 Billboard Awards, the God's Plan hitmaker decided to publicly profess his '"love" for his former adversary:
"Ludacris, we haven’t always seen eye to eye, but I’ve always been a big fan of yours and I got a lot of love for you. I want to let you know that face to face, while I’m still here.”
The Hotline Bling celebrated his 38th birthday on October 24 at a party in Houston. Footage circulating on social media shows the rapper having a blast, surrounded by family and friends who sing for him and bring out a huge birthday cake.
