Bob Weinstein is being sued by his brother and former partner, Harvey Weinstein. Bob and Harvey Weinstein ran their film production company, The Weinstein Company (TWC), together. David Glasser, also mentioned in the lawsuit, was the Chief Operating Officer of TWC.

The lawsuit against Bob Weinstein and Glasser, filed on February 13, accuses the two of financial misdeeds which eventually led to TWC declaring bankruptcy in 2018. Harvey Weinstein has alleged that Bob Weinstein and Glasser were instrumental in deceiving him into getting a $45 million loan which he ultimately defaulted on. According to Harvey Weinstein, he was led to believe by Bob Weinstein and Glasser that taking on the loan was important to save the company. However, Harvey Weinstein maintains that the loan was largely used for personal matters by Bob Weinstein and Glasser. The Associated Press shared Harvey Weinstein’s lawyer’s statement:

“While Harvey personally guaranteed the loan, others within The Weinstein Company enriched themselves and strategically undermined him, leaving him ‘holding the bag’ of debt while ‘lining their pockets’ when the company was in crisis.”

While Bob Weinstein’s lawyer denies the accusations, the lawsuit detailed alleged instances of financial mismanagement which included huge payments made for personal matters. As a result of such squandering of finances, the lawsuit claims that the loan granted by AI International Holdings was defaulted on. According to Associated Press’s coverage of Harvey Weinstein’s allegations, Bob Weinstein and Glasser each had made payouts of $15 million, while Harvey Weinstein was left to account for upwards of $30 million alone.

Abuse allegations and The Weinstein Company’s Bankruptcy

Harvey Weinstein has filed the lawsuit from prison where he currently awaits retrial relating to accusations of s*xual harassment and r*pe. It was in the aftermath of the 2017 s*xual abuse scandal against Harvey Weinstein that TWC had declared bankruptcy in 2018.

The allegations which involved gross abuse of power by Harvey Weinstein who was a prominent Hollywood executive saw more than a hundred women come forward and publicly accuse Harvey Weinstein of s*xual crimes. The accusations sky-balled into a full-fledged movement called the MeToo Movement which empowered victims to come forward online with allegations against other powerful men and their abuse of power to commit s*exual crimes.

In wake of the allegations against Harvey Weinstein, he was removed from his positions at TWC in 2017. TWC declared bankruptcy in 2018 after talks to sell it failed.

TWC co-founder Bob Weinstein's other ventures

Bob Weinstein claimed to have been caught unawares with regard to allegations against his brother in 2017. Following the collapse of TWC, Bob Weinstein announced in October 2019 that he was ready to launch another production company. Naming his endeavor Watch This Entertainment, the producer was ready to put troubles associated with his brother behind him. Watch This Entertainment’s first project was an animated film, Endangered, with actress Tea Leoni. One of the company’s recent productions, Seven Cemeteries, was released late last year.

Bob Weinstein has largely maintained innocence in wake of his brother’s abuse allegations, claiming that he had been unaware of Harvey Weinstein’s activities. However, a report by The Hollywood Reporter in 2019 uncovered various material that could hint at Bob Weinstein's awareness of his brother’s abusive activities, such as payments made personally by Bob Weinstein as hush money to a couple of women.

Moreover, according to Variety Magazine, Bob Weinstein himself faced s*xual harassment allegations in 2016, when a show runner of the 2017 series The Mist, Amanda Segel, accused the executive producer of incessantly pursuing her against her wishes. The allegations were dealt with by TWC by severing any communication between Segel and Bob Weinstein.

For the time being, as Harvey Weinstein awaits his retrial for s*xual abuse amid his medical diagnosis, the impact of the new lawsuit against Bob Weinstein and Glasser remains to be seen.
