Green Day has come under backlash from two Las Vegas radio stations following lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong's unsavory remarks about the city during a recent concert. The punk-rock icon made headlines after declaring Las Vegas a "sh*thole" in response to the Oakland Athletics baseball team moving to the city.
The frontman made his comments during a performance at Oracle Park in San Francisco on September 20, 2024, prompting KOMP 92.3 and X107.5 to pull Green Day's music from their playlists. Before dedicating the song Welcome to Paradise to his hometown, Oakland, Billie Joe Armstrong said:
"We don’t take s— from people like f—ing John Fisher, who sold out the Oakland A’s to Las f—— Vegas. I f—— hate Las Vegas. It’s the worst s—hole in America. We are East Bay — East Bay for life. Forever — Green Day, East Bay — forever. Can you feel me?"
Two Las Vegas radio stations denounce frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, saying "Bye Bye Billie!"
Las Vegas rock station KOMP 92.3 was quick to react to the frontman's comments as they took to Instagram to issue a statement declaring that they will no longer play any of Green Day's tracks. They posted an image of the band, canceled out, along with the hashtag #vegas4ever. The caption read:
"KOMP 92.3 has pulled any and all Green Day from our playlist. It’s not us, Billie…it’s you.”
Another radio station native to Vegas, X107.5, echoed the sentiment, taking to its website to denounce Billie Joe Armstrong.
“In response to Armstrong’s inflammatory comments, the station is banning all Green Day music, effective immediately.”
The website also noted that "now, Armstrong has crossed a line with Las Vegas locals."
According to the website, X107.5 deejay Carlota also chimed in on Billie Joe Armstrong's comments on September 25, stating:
“Maybe he should take a look at the city and the people involved in that transaction than talking smack about the city of Las Vegas. And hey, I hate to say it and as much as the Raiders suck but when they were in Oakland, they were worth a billion or two. Now they’re worth six. It was a good business decision and the A’s want some of that and I don’t blame them.”
The website concluded the statement with:
"So we’re breaking up with Green Day completely. Bye Bye, Billie!"
Green Day is currently on the road for shows that will see them perform in Mexico, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, and more, this year and the next, all part of their Saviors world tour.
