In a recent conversation, The Brady Bunch actor Barry Williams, 70, opened up about his reported off-screen romance with co-star Maureen McCormick, 68, and disclosed their 'on-again, off-again' relationship.
In a new episode of The Real Brody Bros podcast, the actor expressed his thoughts about dating her former partner years back with co-host Christopher Knight. According to E! News, he recalled those days on the podcast and said:
"It was sort of like on-again, off-again with Maureen and I throughout the years."
Barry Williams further continued:
"There was always a little dance being played that was broken up by hiatus."
Maureen's character, Marcia Brady, was the stepsister of Greg Brady, played by Barry, but their real-life bond was very different. After working in the popular 1960s sitcom, it took the actor some time to get continuous roles. Although he got several projects, he had to sell his house and borrow money at a stage in his life, according to a report by MeTV.
Barry Williams spoke about his profession after he finished The Brady Bunch
While many young kids and teenagers tend to experience a rebellious phase, the star faced a similar time in his 20s. While speaking with the Associated Press in 1988, Barry Williams remembered his teenage years and said:
"I think being a teenager is a fate akin to illness. It's a very difficult period, any way you cut it."
Due to his work and lifestyle, he could not be a typical teen rebel. However, he went through his rebellion journey in his mid-20s. During the interview, he revealed:
"In my own life, I found that I went through my own teenage rebellion in my mid-20s, because I had to be so serious and responsible as a teenager. I didn't have time to rebel."
After wrapping up The Brady Bunch, Barry Williams was hesitant to audition as he believed his past credits and projects justified his talent. Unfortunately, this was a wrong step and it impacted his career growth.
During the interview, he said:
"I didn't understand why I had to audition. After all, I had credits [and had been working for a long time.] It's a very arrogant attitude, ludicrous in this business. I was back on the proving block again, and I didn't feel that I was supposed to prove myself."
His attitude towards life and work led to a whirlwind in his career. Seeing the unexpected transition, Williams had to change his attitude. He elaborated:
"What I did was change my attitude. I came to realize that refusing to audition was kind of an excuse for not really putting myself back on the line."
According to Fandom, the actor featured in many TV projects after The Brady Bunch, though he was mostly hired to appear as a guest. Later, he joined musical theater and stage productions and did a few tours with The Sound of Music, Grease, and West Side Story.
Barry Williams made appearances on reality shows such as Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, Celebrity Wife Swap, and Hollywood 7.
Apart from on-screen acting, Williams explored the music industry and performed in concerts. He ventured into writing with his memoir, Growing Up Brady: I Was a Teenage Greg. The 1992 book was The New York Times bestseller.
