Whoopi Goldberg, while celebrating her 69th birthday on The View on November 13, revealed that a bakery that initially made her birthday treats refused to take her order allegedly because of her political views. Although the TV personality did not name the bakery, Entertainment Weekly identified it as Holtermann's Bakery.
While celebrating her birthday on the show, Goldberg gifted the audience her favorite treats, and The View's co-hosts enjoyed her favorite dessert: Charlotte Russe. While talking about the dessert, Goldberg quipped,
"Now, I should tell you, Charlotte Russe has no political learnings, and the place that made these refused to make them for me."
When Sunny Hostin asked, 'Oh really?", Goldberg went on to explain,
"They said that their ovens had gone down, all kinds of stuff, but folks went and got them anyway, which is why I'm not telling you who made them."
Whoopi later speculated saying that she doesn't think it's because she's a woman but perhaps because "they did not like my politics."
Holtermann bakery owner Jill Holtermann responds to Whoopi Goldberg's claims
Although Whoopi Goldberg did not name the bakery that refused to make her birthday treats, Entertainment Weekly tracked down the bakery and found it to be Holtermann Bakery, a 145-year-old bakery in New York. The bakery calls itself a "historical, family-owned bake shop" which makes Pan-European and American sweet delicacies.
Owner Jill Holtermann confirmed that Goldberg initially requested her birthday treats two weeks ago and denies her theories that the bakery refused the order due to her political beliefs. Jill said that they were having trouble with their boilers and "didn't want to make a commitment that I can't carry through."
Jill also confirmed that an unidentified woman picked up around 50 Charlotte Russe desserts from the bakery on November 13 morning at 7:30 am. The owner also noted that the building they operate in is nearly 100 years old and they have frequent equipment issues.
"I said to Whoopi, 'I can't do it right now. We have so many things going on with my boiler,' because the building is from 1930, so, when she called me, I had no idea (if we could) be baking everything."
In the episode, Whoopi Goldberg said that Charlotte Russe was one of her mom's favorites from when she was a kid and she talked about them all the time. She then urged the audience to savor the treats and celebrate with her and her mother.
