Dev Patel fans flocked to San Francisco's Dolores park for a contest that picks the actor's lookalike. Around 20 contestants brought the actor's signature roles to life from Slumdog Millionaire to Monkey Man.
Organized by Sitara Bellam and Tasnim Khandekar, the event started as a casual gathering for friends but soon drew in hundreds of spectators after it went viral. A prize money of $50 was set for the winner.
After Pop Crave posted news of the contest on X, many users took to the comment section to bash look-alike contests.
Social media users questioned the sudden surge of look-alike contests around the nation with other look-alike contests of Harry Styles, Paul Mescal and Timothee Chalamet bringing in a dozen of doppelgangers.

Who won the Dev Patel look alike contest?
Jaipreet Hundal, 25, of San Jose won the Dev Patel look alike contest in San Francisco. Hundal won $50, flowers and a small monkey statue inspired by Patel's directorial debut film Monkey Man.
While talking about the reason behind picking Dev Patel for a look-alike contest, organizers Sitara Bellam, Tasnim Khandakar, and Sahana Rangrajan said they originally planned to host a Robert Pattinson look-alike contest, but changed their minds to focus on South-Asian representation.
Khandakar while speaking to the press said,
"I really feel like South Asian actors have been a little bit marginalized and I think now knowing that Dev Patel can create a crowd this big, this is positive."
The trend of look-alike contest was started by a Timothee Chalamet look-alike contest on October 27, 2024 in New York City. Chalamet attended the event, and the award price was set at $50.
On November 9, 2024, London's Soho Square was full with Harry Styles doppelgangers for a contest organized by journalist Katrina Mirpuri. The event judged participants based on categories like best style, hair, overall lookalike and even a "worst lookalike."
A Paul Mescal look-alike contest was also held shortly after Chalamet's in Dublin's Smithfield Square.
