The Brutalist director Brady Corbet during an appearance on WTF With Marc Maron's podcast revealed that he "made zero dollars" on his Oscar-nominated film.

While speaking about his earnings from the Oscar-nominated film, Corbet mentioned that he has been living off of paychecks,

"I just directed three advertisements in Portugal. It's the first time that I had any money in years."

Corbet directed the film off of a script that he and his partner Mona Fastvold penned. When Maron looked surprised at the statement, Brady reiterated saying,

"Yes, Actually, zero. We had to just sort of live off of a paycheck from three years ago."

The Brutalist featured Adrien Brody who escaped postwar Europe to build a life in America. The movie has won nominations in top categories including, Best Picture, Actor, Directing, and Writing, tying it with Wicked for second-most nominations.

The film won four BAFTAs with Corbet winning the best director and Adrien Brody winning best actor.

"That's a real thing" - Brady Corbet opens up about facing money issues as a director

While talking to Marc Maron on the podcast, Brady Corbet revealed that like him, other directors also go through financial turmoil.

"I've spoken to many filmmakers that have the films that are nominated this year that can't pay their rent. I mean, that's real thing."

Brady Corbet also clarified that filmmakers are "not paid to be promoting a film." The director further said that he has zero income at the moment,

"If you look at certain films that premiered in Cannes, that was almost a year ago...I mean, our film premiered in September. So I've been doing this for six months. And had zero income because I don't have any time to go to work. I can't even take a writing job at the moment."

Corbet called the press circuit "a six-month interrogation" adding that he completed 90 interviews last week. He also mentioned that he's been constantly traveling, while working Saturdays and Sundays and hasn't had a day off since Christmas.

The director earlier responded to online rumors on the use of artificial intelligence technology for his movie after editor David Jancso commented in an interview about using AI to enhance the performance of the film's leads, Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Brady Corbet revealed that Adrien and Felicity's performances are "completely their own" and that they worked for months with dialect coach Tanera Marshall to perfect accents.
