As they say in the movies, The "Goonies never say die." It appears the iconic line from the 40-year-old movie The Goonies has come true. The 1985 Steven Spielberg movie has been picked up for a sequel. Following a group of children from the Goon Docks in Astoria, Oregon, the movie is funny and thrilling at the same time. Fans of the original movie are excited and looking forward to the sequel to the old movie.
Most of the original cast has not said much about the upcoming sequel. Additionally, the movie is yet to go into production, so there's a lot of time before the much-anticipated sequel hits the screen. There is no information about the plot of the sequel either. But Ke Huy Quan, who played the character Data in the original movie, recently talked about the sequel in a conversation with Entertainment Tonight.

Ke Huy Quan on The Goonies sequel

In a conversation with Entertainment Tonight, Ke Huy Quan, while promoting his movie Zootopia 2, set to release on November 26, 2025, also shared updates regarding The Goonies sequel. Ke Huy Quan played Data in the original movie. It is yet to be announced if he will be reprising an older version of his younger counterpart in the sequel.
He commented that the sequel hopes to be true to the original film, with the same team working on it this time around.
"Well, fingers crossed. We have an incredible writer writing the script. Chris Columbus, Spielberg, uh you know a lot of the same creative team. uh you know, accepting we've been developing for a long time. I want to be optimistic this time around. Hopefully, it will happen soon."
The original Goonies movie was directed by Richard Donner, with Spielberg and Columbus also involved in the making of the movie. Back in 1985, the movie garnered critical acclaim as well as $64 million at the global box office. It also received a score of 77% from the Certified Fresh Critics and 91% from Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie became a cult classic when it was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry in the U.S. for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
There are not many names attached to the sequel to The Goonies at the moment except the writers, Columbus and Spielberg, so only time will tell if it will be able to bring back the magic of the original movie. A director for the sequel has yet to be announced for the movie, considering that Richard Donner passed away at 91 in 2021.
