"We get along so well"– Dick Van Dyke recalls how 'everyone' doubted his marriage to Arlene because of their 46-year age gap

Veteran actor Dick Van Dyke is, for the first time, getting candid about his marriage to wife Arlene Silver. The couple, who have an age difference of forty-six years, were married in 2012 and continue to enjoy their time together. During an exclusive interview with People magazine, the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang actor said that despite their age difference, both of them are incredibly compatible.

"We get along so well."

Dick Van Dyke was previously in a longtime relationship with partner, Michelle Trivola Marvin since 1976, untill her death from lung cancer in 2009, at the age of 75. Van Dyke was also previously married to Margie Willet from 1948 till their divorce in 1984, after thirty six years of marriage.

Dick Van Dyke during his interview with People magazine, highlighted that everyone around him questioned his relationship with Arlene Silver due to their age difference.

"Everybody said it wouldn't work,"

Silver, on the other hand, added:

"Yeah. I mean it's like eerie how well it works. People the same age don't last.”

Dick Van Dyke also recounted the special moment he met Arlene Silver. The couple met sixteen years ago, in 2009, at the SAG Awards. The then thirty seven year old Silver was working backstage as a makeup artist when Dick Van Dyke walked up to her to introduce himself.

“I never said hello to a strange girl in my life. I was too scared. But I was at a show backstage and she walked by, and for some reason, I just jumped up and said, ‘Hi, I'm Dick.’ There's something about her and got me, and I was right.”

Arlene Silver, who is now fifty-three, adds that even to this day, the couple are extremely supportive of each other, before adding how they like spending time together.

"Very supportive of each other. We just love being home. We love Malibu, and it's our favorite place, our house especially. So this is like our, you're at our house. We're so grateful. Our house did get hit by the Franklin fire, but in the scheme of things, we got very lucky.”

Back in 2013, during an interview with People magazine, Dick Van Dyke, who had married Arlene Silver in 2012, quipped about how his entire family welcomed her. The Art of Love actor had four children with ex ex-wife, Margie Willet.

"My grandkids call her Grandma. My four kids just love her.”

Over the decade, the couple has made innumerable red carpet appearances together, with her being present by his side, when in 2021, Dick Van Dyke was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors. In 2024, Dyke Van Dyke and Arlene Silver also made a special appearance in the extended directors cut version of Coldplay's hit single All My Love.
