A Republican House member proposed amending the U.S. Constitution on January 23, 2025, in order to allow President Donald Trump to serve a third term in the White House.

While there has been no official update after the initial proposal, if it is implemented, the new resolution will apply to any future president.

Trump may serve a third term as House Republicans laud him: Fact or fiction?

Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles has suggested the idea of Donald Trump running for a third term, noting:

"He has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal."

Suggesting that the president should serve two elected terms more, he stated:

“It is imperative that we provide President Trump with every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration,”
“He is dedicated to restoring the republic and saving our country, and we, as legislators and as states, must do everything in our power to support him. I am proposing an amendment to the Constitution to revise the limitations imposed by the 22nd Amendment on presidential terms."

Ogles' proposition comes days after President Trump was sworn in for the second time in the White House, in a non-consecutive term. He is also now the second U.S. president to have ever done that.

Axios reports that the proposition has "virtually no chance of becoming ratified." Just after the meeting, House Republicans made it clear that the remarks were nothing but a jest.
