Was Ron Howard in The Music Man? A look into acclaimed director’s storied career as daughter Bryce Dallas pays tribute on 71st birthday

Actress and director Bryce Dallas Howard recently took to instagram and wished her father, filmmaker Ron Howard, on his 71st birth anniversary. On March 1, 2025, Bryce shared a picture of her with Ron, with a sweet and short caption to portray her love for her father.

Last month Ron and Bryce Dallas Howard were part on a panel in Megacon, where Ron recalled how he wanted to protect his daughter from the complications of a child actor. Ron himself was a child actor who had made a stage appearence when he was just 18 months old.

The post on Ron Howard's birthday is not the first instance where Bryce had shared her love for her dad. She often speaks candidly about their relationship.

Ron recalled spending time with his father, Rance Howard, who was an actor, on the sets of his films. He shared that he saw a spark for performing arts in Bryce's eyes as a child. However, he was scared that she would fall under his shadow. According to People magazine, Ron said that Bryce would ask about acting when she was a child, to which Ron and his wife Cheryl would refuse.

"She would ask about [acting], and my wife Cheryl and I would say, 'No, we can't let you be a child actor.'"

Bryce Dallas is the oldest daughter of Ron Howard and Cheryl Howard. The couple is blessed with four children, While Bryce is 43 now (her birthday falls on March 2), Jocelyn and Paige are twins, and Reed, the youngest child, is 37.


Ron Howard's journey to success

Howard was born in 1954, in Duncan, Oklahoma. His parents — Rance and Jean Speegle Howard — were actors, and this shaped his childhood. His first screen appearence happened when he was four years old, after his first stage appearence when he was just 18 months old.

In the 1960s, Ron rose to fame portraying the character of Opie Taylor in the popular show titled The Andy Griffith Show for a period of eight years. He has also acted in the 1962 blockbuster movie, The Music Man, besides hit films such as The Courtship of Eddie's Father, and The Wild Country.

In the cult classic film, The Music Man, Howard plays the character of Winthrop Paroo, a 10-year-old who lives with his mother Mrs.Paroo and sister Marian. One night, when Winthrop comes home, Amaryllis (who secretly likes him) asks him to join a party she is throwing. Winthrop runs away to watch the July 4 festivites with his sister where he sings tracks like Gary Indiana and The Wells Fargo Wagon. Fans adored Howard's ginger-haired look in the movie.

By the end of his teenage years, he was part of a popular sitcom titled Happy Days. Ron Howard directed some episodes of the series, too. Then, as part of a deal, Roger Corman offered Howard a film, but the latter chose to direct it, too, besides acting in it. The film, a road comedy titled Grand Theft Auto, has Ron Howard as co-writer with his father, Rance Howard, and director, as well as lead star. Released in 1977, the film became a critical and as commercial hit. Over the years, Ron Howard has made films such as Willow, Splash, Cocoon, Ransom, The Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons, Apollo 13, and Far and Away that are still cherished by cinephiles. He earned the Academy Award for Best Director and Best Picture for A Beautiful Mind.

Ron Howard has produced multiple television series, too. He resides with his wife in Greenwich, Connecticut.
