Devin Strader, known for his brief appearance on ABC's The Bachelorette, has become the latest target of public speculation following some recent drama involving Jenn Tran, a recent contestant on The Bachelor and his ex-fiancé.
An affidavit from Strader's arrest warrant surfaced, revealing that he was once arrested and had a restraining order filed against him.
The allegations first came to light when Entertainment Weekly reported, on September 17, that the 28-year-old was arrested on one felony count of “simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling" in 2017 for breaking into his ex-girlfriend's home in Louisiana. He was also accused of being abusive to her.
Devin Strader's ex-girlfriend claims he "physically, verbally and mentally" abused her
Strader's ex was not named in the filing. However, Entertainment Weekly revealed that, per an arrest warrant affidavit from the Baton Rouge Police Department, the ex-girlfriend returned home, only to find out that her house had been broken into, and a diamond necklace was missing. It was the same one gifted to her by Strader.
But the allegations didn't end there. She also accused him of repeatedly showing up at her house, "banging on the door several times and screaming at her." He lived two doors away from her at the time. She also recalled an instance of him laughing at her while she was dealing with a flat tire and getting it replaced.
The affidavit also revealed that despite the restraining order she had against him, he allegedly "made a fire out in the street." According to her, he did it with "what appeared to be the actual restraining order."
However, things took a more dire turn when she alleged that Strader also got physical with her. According to Hollywood Reporter, Strader once “put me in a chokehold covering my mouth” and “spit on me and threw his drink on me at [a] Pelicans game in front of everyone in the stands," she claimed.
She also alleged that she woke up to bruises on various body parts and a "pounding" head. According to her, he nearly "killed" her. Furthermore, the ex-girlfriend alleged that he was “verbally and mentally" abusive to her.
“He has degraded me and taken everything from me. My self-confidence, self-esteem, and I hope no other girl ever has to go through what I went through.”
Not long after the filing, Strader was arrested on charges of burglary, to which he pled guilty. He also did the same for charges of criminal trespass and simple criminal damage to property of less than $500. Entertainment Weekly reported that he was given one year of unsupervised probation.
Deadline reported an insider's comment on the situation:
“We take the safety of our contestants very seriously and make every effort to conduct thorough diligence. As exhaustive as our vetting process is, this protective order did not surface in our searches."
However, while the restraining order itself was sealed, the burglary arrest affidavit is public record. This means that during the vetting process for The Bachelorette, it could have been discovered. Deadline also reported that Strader's arrest was flagged, but after further questioning, he was cleared to participate.
This is not the first time the channel has come under scrutiny for its vetting process. In season 14, it was revealed that contestant Lincoln Adim once had trouble with the law for indecent assault and battery.
During The Bachelorette season finale on September 3, Tran proposed to Strader. However, in the After the Final Rose special, she revealed he wasn't the person she thought and said he ended things with her over a phone call. Strader defended himself on Instagram, but the video has since been deleted.
