Fresh out of his Critics Choice award win, Jon M. Chu has shared an insight about the upcoming sequel to Wicked.
The Cynthia Erivo-led musical adaptation is currently on a winning streak in this year's award season. It has also raked up ten nominations at the Oscars, including two for its stars, Cynthia Erivo & Ariana Grande. Whether it's Golden Globes or the BAFTAs, the film has been one of the highest-nominated 2024 films.
While the film has won a few accolades, Director Jon M. Chu has finally received an award himself at the Critics Choice Awards. While speaking with Deadline about its impact on the upcoming sequel, the director said,
“It does affect when we went back into the cut, like, ‘Oh, wait, they’re really paying attention to every detail,’ and how we plan on paying certain things off. Maybe we can be more subtle with that, or maybe we don’t have to remind them of so much,”
Wicked: For Good- Jon M. Chu reveals what to expect from the upcoming Wicked sequel
Wicked has been on a winning streak upon its release, whether it has to do with the box office or the critical reception. The film also earned 10 Oscar nods, although not for its director, Jon M. Chu.
Still, the Crazy Rich Asians director has earned a surprise win at this year's Critics Choice Awards. It was surprising for many since he was contending against the likes of Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Coralie Fargeat (The Substance), Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), and Sean Baker (Anora), all of whom have received Best Director Oscar nods and were considered frontrunners for this award.
During the Q&A sessions after the win, Jon M. Chu teased how the winning streak at the award shows impacts his creative process on Wicked: For Good.
“I’m living two timelines right now because I’ve been in the edit all week. So this morning I’m literally screening the movie for our internal crew to just get a sense of how it plays and then I’m jumping over to here to celebrate a movie that’s already made with all the same actors and a lot of the same things and you’re just like — it is a mind-boggling thing to go through that.”
When speaking about Wicked: For Good and the possible changes in the world-building, the director said:
“If you love those two women, wait until you see where their relationship goes. Wait until you see the heights that they can hit. Oz is bigger. It’s more expansive. And, in the time that we’re living in, it speaks so directly to the moment and to the courage and the consequences it takes, to some of the choices that we have to make and who you choose to become when you know the truth."
Wicked: For Good is slated to be released on November 21, 2025.
