Valerie Bertinelli’s ex Mike Goodnough says he ended relationship, contradicting her claims

Mike Goodnough says he was the one to end the relationship, not Valerie Bertinelli.

Goodnough responded to a netizens' comment on Threads on April 20 which quoted a People's article on Goodnough opening up about his breakup with Valerie Bertinelli. A netizen commented:

"She left you bro. Get over it. This is f******* cringe."

To which Goodnough replied saying:

"I ended the relationship. You tried though. You really tried."

This comes after Goodnough in a now-deleted April, 2025 Instagram post, slammed Bertinelli saying:

"Unfortunately, over the past two months, Valerie has been playing a one-woman tennis match thinking there is someone on the other side of the net."

He then accused of misinterpreting his words and making it about herself:

"When in that place, she reads all of my posts, centers herself in them, takes offense over wholly imagined sights, and then lashes out angrily with a 'response' to things that were neither to her or about her. Among people who follow us both, that behavior has created the impression that we are going back-and-forth. We are not."

Mike Goodnough is a lifestyle writer and the two dated from March to November 2024.

In another Instagram post on April 19, after deleting his earlier Instagram rant about Bertinelli where he accused the American actress of making things about herself, Mike Goodnough said:

"I regret having posted it. I wish I hadn't. The issue addressed was real. My post made it worse rather than better."

The writer also mentioned that breakup with Bertinelli has been the "most painful" experience in his life. Goodnough emphasized that he had hoped for a "gentle parting" rather than a "closed door."

However, despite Mike's comments on Valerie, the actress had been full of praises for the writer, even after their November split. In a February 18, Instagram post, Valerie Bertinelli reflected on relationship with Mike noting that she "fumbled the last true good man I met" after "two-failed marriages."

Valerie Bertinelli was earlier married to Eddie Van Halen from 1981-2007, and later to Tom Vitale from 2011-2022. The actress met Goodnough on Instagram. The two began texting as friends. While Bertinelli called their text exchange "strictly platonic" she added that there was something about the writer that she "connected with that felt familiar."

Goodnough is a lifestyle writer, who mainly posts on his Substack account, under the name, "Hoarse Whisperings." Goodnough had announced their relationship via a Substack article in April 2024.
