Twinless was received well by the audiences during its world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. The comedy film stars Dylan O'Brien in the lead role and is directed by James Sweeney, who has also written the script. It was shot entirely in Portland, Oregon, in 2024.

Reportedly, the film was loved by viewers during the festival screening. This will be good for its eventual theatrical release as it will help generate some hype and excitement among viewers since Sundance is regarded by many as a prestigious film festival on a global scale where films from different regions are shown to a large audience.

Here's the official synopsis of the film:

Two grieving men bond in support group and form unlikely friendship.

Twinless impresses audience at Sundance Film Festival

The Sundance Film Festival has described the film as follows:

“Bittersweet tale of trauma-bonding friendship is a smart comedy willing to confront themes like loss, loneliness, and codependency head-on. Sweeney scripts a slippery narrative to mirror his emotionally damaged characters as they struggle for connection, revealing painful personal truths along the way.”

Sundance remains a pivotal film festival, and the response Twinless has received is expected to help the film with its marketing and gain credibility among the rest of the audience.

More about Twinless

Twinless is the second directorial effort of James Sweeney, who had earlier made the 2019 independent film Straight Up. He is also its writer and has also co-produced it with David Permut. The film follows the lives of two men who meet at a support group for people whose twins have died.

Dylan O'Brien plays the twin roles of Rocky and Roman. He is known for his performance in the TV show Teen Wolf and the Maze Runner trilogy of films. Interestingly, Sweeney appears in the film as Denis.

Speaking to Variety, O'Brien talked about playing twins in the film. He said:

"The twins were so distinct on the page. I felt such a different connectivity to each of them. That came really naturally. For me, it’s very physical. Once the process kicks into full gear with costumes, hair and makeup and the things that James [Sweeney] and I discussed in terms of walk, talk and posture, that helps me.”

Sweeney spoke about acting in his film.

“It was a fear, especially being someone that people won’t be familiar with, that people will hate me. But I just wanted to make the movie. I was trying to thread that line and bring empathy and hope that people can see the worst parts of themselves in the character, too.”

According to Variety, Twinless was screened in the competition section called U.S. Dramatic of the Sundance Film Festival. During the screening, there was an issue with the film's audio, but the audience loved the film.
