James Corden recently moved back to the UK and is encouraging writers in the TV industry. The television host and actor gave an inspiring speech at the Royal Television Society Awards on March 25. During the event, he was also awarded the Judges' Award along with his Gavin And Stacey co-star Ruth Jones.
Besides talking about the ailing television industry, he also asked writers to be "bolder" amid the hype around the latest Netflix series, Adolescence.
James Corden began his speech by addressing how he missed BBC while living in Los Angeles. He mentioned that in the present time, it is nearly impossible for young writers to achieve creative freedom on their first projects. Corden further talked about how the TV industry is facing budget issues. However, he urged writers not to get demotivated and to keep up with their work.
"Right now as an industry, we are facing so much uncertainty, budgets tightening, platform consolidating and the sheer volume of content sometimes make you feel like you are shouting into the void. But I urge you not to let it dim your light," Corden said, per Daily Mail.
He further continued,
"We are blessed to live in a place that has the BBC and the National Theatre, and these institutions are the pinnacle of this country's creative output."
Corden realized these institutes need to be "protected" after living in the US for a long time. He said,
"After living away for so many years, I cannot tell you how much these institutions need to be protected. But perhaps the challenges that we face today are not signals to retreat but a challenge to do the opposite."
Praising the new Netflix show, James Corden asked writers to be more assertive.
"When you see the response to a show like Adolescence these past few days maybe it's telling us that now might be the time to actually be bolder and to back the ideas that perhaps might scare you a little."
For the unversed, Adolescence follows the story of a young man named Jamie Miller, who has been arrested for murdering a schoolmate. As he faces several charges against him, his parents have to face a difficult situation. The show's IMDb rating is 8.4 out of 10, and has been receiving critical acclaim ever since its release.
The event was also a special one for all Gavin And Stacey fans as James Corden and Ruth Jones gave a speech together. The sitcom has broken several records in the UK.
