The Brady Bunch actress Maureen McCormick, in an April 11 X post, slammed podcaster Joe Rogan for claiming that the "R" word has returned.
The "R" word is a slur used to slam people with intellectual disabilities, and is making a comeback, as per Rogan. In an April 10 episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan, while celebrating the return of the slur, said,
"The word r******ed is back, it's one of the great cultural victories that I think is spurred on probably by podcasts."
A day after the podcast, Mandy took to X to share her disappointment and slam Rogan for his comment, saying,
"Joe Rogan, your statement that "the 'R' word is back and it's one of the great cultural victories' ignores the terrible hurt is caused to the millions of people with intellectual disabilities. This is not a victory. It is a regression."
McCormick's post quickly gained attention, with netizens showing support to the actress and highlighting concerns about normalizing disability slurs and hate speech. Rogan is yet to respond to the actress, while Elon Musk had also shared his post, seemingly in support of Rogan.
Rogan used the R word days after Kanye West used it to describe Beyonce and Jay-Z's kids. West, in a since-deleted tweet, asked people if they had seen the couple's younger kids.
"WAIT HAS ANYONE SEEN JAY-Z AND BEYONCES YOUNGER KIDS THEYRE R*******"
More about Joe Rogan using offensive slurs
This is not the first time podcaster Joe Rogan has used slurs in the guise of comedy. Rogan in February 2022, took to his Instagram account after musician India Arie posted a compilation of clips of Rogan using the N word more than 20 times. In his video, Rogan addressed his behavior and apologised, saying,
"I'm making this video to talk about the most regretful and shameful thing I've ever had to talk about publicly. There's a video that's out, that's a compilation of me saying the N-word. It's a video that's made of clips taken out of context of me of...12 years of conversations on my podcast, and it's all smushed together, and it looks fu*** horrible, even to me."
Rogan then went on to explain that although he hadn't used the slur in years, earlier for a long time, instead of saying 'the N-word', he would just say the word, and people would understand him as long as "it was in context."
Rogan has also been using the disability slur for years and was slammed earlier for impersonating a disabled child during his stand-up, as per a November 2022 Newsweek article.
